Awesome
This is a non-fiction biographical account of the Duchess of Devonshire's life in the late 18th century. br /I found it fascinating and very readable. The detail about the lives of the characters is amazing, at times funny and at other times sad. The lives they led were extraordinary, full of affairs, illegimate childen, political intrigue, the "ton", social maneuvering, the french revolution, the madness of King George III, and the crazy antics of his son. Who would believe its all true? br /Well worth a read, even if you've already seen the film - especially if you have already seen the film - the book has so much more...

excellent film!
The Duchess [DVD] [2008] br / br /I thought this film was excellent...the acting is superb .. Ralph Fiennes is wonderful as always and Keira Knightley went from good actress to very fine actress in my opinion. The musical score is lovely as are the locations and watching this film was really enjoyable. I totally recommend this film.

A Bit of a disappointment
I picked up this book because I wanted to see the movie and always like to read the book before. While this book does give a good account of the Duchess' life, I found that it became exceedingly boring. While there are moments throughout the book that compensate a little, unless you want to read about the history of politics around the 17- 1800's I wouldn't really recommend it.

Disappointly Dull
Having watched the film I felt I should read the book as they are almost always much better than the large screen counterpoint. I was left somewhat disappointed by this. br / br /Sure, the book is well researched and referenced and the work behind the historical fact that has gone into this book is undeniably impressive. As a history text for one to reference it is entirely suitable. br / br /However this book seems to be promoted as a highly entertaining story. That it is not. The plot is just a blow-by-blow historical account with no attempt to really make the story entertaining or actually give much insight into the characters. I only finished the novel out of sheer stubborness and that in itself was a chore. br / br /As a historical refernce text it fits. As something to read for entertainments sake, don't bother as it is just dull, dull, dull.

The Duchess comes to life
The book is simply amazing. The letters that the Duchess exchanged with others bring her character and her peers back to life. Despite the high rank and society Georgiana belonged to, she was just a woman whose ambitions moved her forward, whose love-life could not be more difficult and restrained her from being loved in return. The film adaptation is a far cry from the books original text.
