a classic annualThis annual is beautifully illustrated and enjoyable to read. It seems perhaps a little short but is satisfying notheless. Rupert fans will enjoy.

Birthday happy nostalgiaI grew up reading Rupert annuals usually having one for Christmas and avidly reading my grandmother's collection when we visited her twice yearly or so. I thought I would ask for a Rupert annual this year to indulge in comfortable nostalgic remembrance of a happy childhood. I was horrified to read, in reviews here, that standards had slipped badly with the latest annual so I awaited delivery of mine with apprehension...
br /I'm delighted. There is an aura of timeless happy innocence in the stories. The quirky anachronistic early 20th century clothing and references remain at the (welcome) expense of electronic modernity - Sailor Sam still has his queue and the Squire wears a reassuringly dapper yellow bow-tie. I was happy that Rupert's parents got to join their son in one of his improbable adventures. How could one fail to be enchanted by the thought of Mr. and Mrs. Bear trapped in a pink ice-cream van suspended in midair by the Professor's hot air balloon. We now understand from whom Rupert's fortitude was inherited "My goodness me," says Mrs. Bear... "But I think I'd rather be on the ground." (the bears nevertheless have the composure to send the Professor an ice-lolly in a basket!) The stories have an undercurrent of just enough malevolence - witness the sinister wolf shadow in the wood - to engage young minds; but are tempered with magic, happy endings, treasure and a fine cream tea! I hope to be reading these to my children, when they come along, stimulating their imaginations and dazzling them with the same sort of colour and excitement I enjoyed as a child.

Great bedtime storiesI have read all these stories to my 5 year old son and he enjoyed all of them, the fact that you can read a very basic version, the rhyme or the full version is ideal at this age also.
