Doesn't translate
With apologies to the other reviewers, I have to say this book simply is not remotely funny to me or my children. br /I read about the Roald Dahl Funny Prize and loved the idea so much I bought this and the other 2008 winner for my two children. Now, I am a not-so-closeted Anglophile, so I do understand the gap between our two countries' senses of humor (or humour, if you prefer), but we read each book excitedly and... nothing. We literally didn't even smirk, much less laugh-out-loud roll-on-the-floor guffaw as I was anticipating. We read on and on, HOPING it would get funny. Nothing. My poor son finished it and I asked "Did it ever get funny?" "Nope." Just a warning to any other Americans. Can we have a Funny Prize for the US? Maybe I'll do it.

He's got her reading!
My grand-daughter got this at her school book fair a few weeks ago. She's not a great reader of "story" books, normally preferring factual animal books, but I read the back cover to her and she started giggling (a good sign) so she decided to have a go at it. Well, she absolutely adored it and was often to be heard laughing and just HAD to come and read us bits! We've bought the whole set now and she now happily reads in bed before going to sleep. The trouble is, what on earth do we get next that will have the same appeal! Any ideas?

Mr Gum the Dancing Bear
My 9 year old Grandson enjoys all the Mr Gum Books this one is no exception.

Success every time
You just cannot go wrong with Mr. Gum. Any child age 7/8/9/10 will love Andy Stanton's books. Makes it so easy to be a favoured Aunt when you bring one of them out each birthday and Christmas. Andy Stanton needs to speed up his writing or I am soon going to run out of new books to give.
