Look, listen and repeat methodology
The production of the materials are excellent, and work very well on my MACBOOk with tiger OS.
The first step of the lesson shows four photographs. A native Japanese speaker speaks a sentence, and the Japanese characters are shown. You respond by repeating and selecting the photo described by the sentence.
There is no translation, so you learn by inference, as you would if you were in Japan. The software allows you to go at your own pace and to repeat everything as often as you wish. The first lesson teaches you to recognise boys and girls, men and women, alone and in groups, and introduces the verbs for eating, drinking, running and swimming. You see the pictures, hear the language, read the characters, but there is no translation.
I have been learning Japanese for 10 years, but am still a beginner! I enjoyed using this material, but anyone starting out would need to use other materials (text books, dictionaries, classes, etc), to learn grammar and vocabulary, as this does not provide a translation or explain the sentence structure. However, it is excellent for developing listening and speaking skills - which you can't get from a book. There is a facility for recording what you have said, hearing the playback and looking at a voice-trace. This is compared with a native speaker, so you can judge how close you are. (A headset comes with the pack)
This is not an easy method of learning, but used in conjunction with other resources, I think it is a very good product. The cost is reasonable compared with the cost of 10 evening classes at a language school.
