SynopsisWhen Denny Hulme won the 1967 Formula 1 World Championship, he jokingly asked Jim Clark to do 'the fame bit' for him as he so disliked being in the spotlight. Behind the wheel of a racing car, however, the self-effacing New Zealander, known affectionately as 'The Bear', showed ferocious determination. Racing was a passion. This book charts his illustrious career, which included eight Grands Prix victories and two CanAm sports car titles.

Too many unanswered questions!!Borrow this book by all means but do not buy it!! It is a review of the type, 'and then we went to Silverstone where I qualified fourth, got a good start and then lost time with a misfire...'.
There should be so many interesting stories concerning Jack Brabham, Ron Tauranac and others and, sadly, these are in very short supply. How did Denny, having won the F1 championship with Brabham, jump ship to mcLaren? There must be an interesting story in there somewhere, but you will not read much about in this book, which is frustrating because Eoin Young should be the best person to tell it because he was there at the time.
After Bruce McLaren died there was a transfer of power to Phil Kerr/Teddy Mayer, how did this come about. No mention of Bruce's widow, Pat, either, surely Pat had a role to play after Bruce died.
Disappointing, incomplete, not enough interviews with other people who were around at the time.

Denny Hulme' BiographyI have been an admirer of Eoin Young since the 1960's and am aware he was (is!) not only an excellent writer and observer of what I regard as a classic era of Grand Prix Motor Racing but also very much involved with the 'New Zealand Contingent' (McLaren, Hulme, Amon, Etc.) during their most glorious years. However like similar books on Mclaren, Amon etc (even himself!) he tends to leave me a trifle disappointed. In this particular book he does give valuable insight into Hulme's early years (which previously I only had a small understanding of) but thereafter it largely reproduces original jointly authored (superb) magazine articles and the final 18 years of his life are very condensed (and at times even a little confusing). I am sure that overall this book will be of invaluable use to motor racing historians but as earlier indicated I had hoped for so much more personal insight on the subject matter.
So OK Eoin but I still feel that you must have a much better book inside you!
