Drawing from extensive interviews with those who knew and worked with the actor, Marshall Terrill relates McQueen s delinquent childhood, his success in films like The Great Escape and Bullitt, his harrowing last days in a Mexican hospital, and more. New and old fans alike will feel they have met this small-town rebel who kept millions spellbound.

Synopsis
"Steve McQueen, The Last Mile" documents Barbara McQueen's three-and-a-half year relationship with the movie icon, and includes candid shots from 1977 to 1980 - McQueen's years out of the spotlight. It chronicles Barbara's early history and modeling career; her years with McQueen at Trancas Beach and Santa Paula as well as behind-the-scene photographs on the sets of "Tom Horn" and "The Hunter". The book is written in passage form, weaving Barbara McQueen's personal history, her relationship with her famous husband and the stories behind the hundreds of candid pictures she took. It also includes a special foreword by Pat Johnson, McQueen's close friend and karate instructor. There is also a special signed limited edition available, ISBN 978-1-85443-226-1, released Nov 2006, cost 55 that includes a slip case and a CD of Steve McQueen reviewing his script notes for the movie "Tom Horn".

A huge disappointment
I found this book to be an intrusive betrayal of Steve McQueen's last years. I wonder why Barbara Minty published photographs of McQueen off duty, when she admits that he was intensely private? Allegedly, they had agreed to produce a book together, with his writing and her photographs, but this book seems to be more about Barbara's need to validate her 3 year relationship with him. The photographs are like amateur snapshots and I felt upset to see the great Steve McQueen diminished in a tacky coffee table book.

Excellent biography of a superstar rebel
I have read this biography through summer and I have to admit that it is an excellent and very well documented account of McQueen's life, the only annoying is that the author finds it necessary to underline that in every picture that McQueen starred was better than his costarrs and that is the reason that other actors avoided acting in the same films with him.
I disagree, as Newman was as good as McQueen was in Tower Inferno, and Huffman even better in Pappillon.
It seems that McQueen adopted a childish behaviour that helped him advance his ego and not his carreer. His drugs, cars and women lifestyle as it is described by the author made McQueen in my eyes seem like a lost boy...And maybe that is the best description for him.
You will enjoy this biography.

Outstanding and Enthralling Read
Whether you are a Steve Mcqueen fan or not this book is worth the read. From his childhood to fame and ultimate death this book was suprisingly an emotional rollercoaster from the first few pages and does not gloss over Mcqueens volatile dark side but you finish the book feeling empathy towards the ultimately untimely demise of such a wonderful actor.

An absolute MUST for Fans of Steve McQueen!
It is a cliche' to write this, but this book is like glue you simply can't put it down!

It is is the DEFINATIVE account of the life and times of Steve McQueen detailing in great depth the 'Cooler Kings' rough childhood growing up in the Boys Republic as a child, to his days at the top of the Hollywood tree, and through to to his untimely death in 1980.

A book which is as deeply moving, as it is interesting and true. I found it so involivng that the details surrounding the build up to Steve's death had me choking back tears. The finest biography I've ever read. And a book I'll read again and again.
