Author : David OwenBinding : HardcoverEAN : 9781865087580Edition : illustrated editionISBN : 1865087580Label : Allen UnwinManufacturer : Allen UnwinNumber of pages : 228Publication date : 2003-06-01Publisher : Allen UnwinTitle : Thylacine: The Tragic Tale of the Tasmanian TigerFormat : IllustratedLanguages : ArrayStudio : Allen Unwin This slim volume would appear to be a definative statement on the thylacine (tasmanian tiger)but not only covers the demise of the tiger it deals with thr history of the settlement of Tasmania from 1803 and the genocide of the 4000 Tasmanian aborigines the last of whom died in 1836.
br /The tiger found a haven, with no predators, when Tasmania broke of from Australia 12,000 years ago.
br /In the early 1800s it was estimated 5,000 tigers existed in Tasmania but myths, greed, bounties and stupidity lead to the last tiger dying in captivity in 1936 and being declared extinct in1986.
br /In the last two decades there have been numerous "sightings"in rural Tasmania but none have been confirmed. There is the possibility of revival of the tiger by cloning which is being actively pursued by scientists in Australia.
br /The text is excellent and the number of pictures impressive-the ones in colour are good but too many are black and white on matt paper which markedly affects the detail. The type size should have been bigger and the print darker.
