Amazon.co.uk Review It's impossible not to smile at the opening of the B flat Concerto--as the violins and quacking oboes playfully lob phrases to one another. Telemann always comes across as such a genial figure from his music, though the fact that that is a superficial view is immediately proved by the slow movement of the same concerto, decked in shades of grey and immensely solemn. But it seems he can't be serious for long--the final movement bursts in like guests arriving at a surprise party. Though each concerto (brilliantly scored, by the way--Telemann liked nothing more than filling his aural canvases with splashes of instrumental colour) is recognisably by the same composer, each is vividly characterised according to the special qualities of his solo instruments. The best is saved till last--a delectable E major concerto unusually combining flute, oboe d'amore and viola d'amore. Once heard, this one won't go away in a hurry. Telemann certainly doesn't spare his players, but Collegium Musicum 90 and its myriad soloists dances along with a spring in its collective step--resist it if you can. I--Harriet Smith/I
