Editorial reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
De La Soul's third album renounces the pop crossover, mocking wit, and conceptual sprawl of their earlier work in favour of a relaxed, sober set of individual tracks. They also rely more on their friends: there are a couple of top- notch guest shots by Shortie No Mass, and the JB Horns add deliciously jazzy solos and vamps all over the disc. Prince Paul is still producing, but he contents himself with sharp funk and jazz loops. Though not the group's most dazzling work, Buhloone Mindstate has some of the group's finest lyrics: "I Am I Be", a meditation on Black English and identity, and "Breakadawn", a subtle tribute to hip- hop's old school. --Douglas Wolk

Description
The third album from De La Soul, BUHLOONE MIND STATE, stresses the importance of discovery of self. Tracks like "I AM IBe" and "Ego Trippin'" force a kind of deep self-cleansing introspection. BUHLOONE MIND STATE is also another example of how lyrically challenging this group of MCs has always been. Sax legend Maceo Parker joins the crew to blow impressively on "I Be Blowin'". There are also appearances from Guru and Biz Markie. Though BUHLOONE MIND STATE isn't De La Soul'sgreatest-selling album, it might be the group's deepest andmost creative. Its 11 songs prove that it's not quantity that counts, but quality.

The best De La album by far.
I can't believe how slept on this LP is. Not only is it by far the best LP De La Soul ever dropped, it's easily in my top 10 hip hop records of all time!

With the execption of the closing track, everything here is pure dope. The great Maceo Parker appears on 'I Be Blowin' with a beautiful horn arrangement layed over a jazzy beat. Guru pops up on 'Patti Dooke'. Michael Jackson meets Smokey Robinson and the Pointer Sisters on the classic 'Breakadawn'. 'In The Woods', 'Ego Trippin', hell it's all beautiful.

Cop this LP right now!

not quite 3 feet high.....
Everybody owns a de la album, this is a great album but if I were to choose one it would be 3 feet high & rising. Buhloone Mindstate is weird and wonderful, like every de la soul album. In this album we get Mase havin a blow on his horn for a track. There are a couple of big treats on this album such as 'Stone age' featuring Biz Markie and in particular 'Patti Dookie' featuring Guru. Every song is completely original with great beats and Posdnuos (possibly the most mellow and smoothest rapper out there) as good as ever. All in all if you're thinking of getting in to de la soul this probably isn't the one for you. Any existing de la soul fans out there? For you this is a must.
