MasterpieceReally this is just a complete and utter masterpiece , one of the greatest albums you will ever hear .
br /I own lots of Tony Bennett recordings and , although always good , it's only occasionally that he can match Sinatra . However , on this one he surpasses the master on almost every track . By the time of this recording his voice had matured with age , growing into itself and maturing to perfection . The way this is recorded puts that fine instrument right to the fore and for good reason , he soars .
br /I confess that i don't know much about Bill Evans but he does a grand job here , his piano being the sole accompaniment means he has a lot of work to do but he carries it of superbly .
br /Truly one of the great vocal performances ever by Mr. Bennett though , a classic work of art for all time .

A Great RecordingIn the same way as I never expected the Johnny Hartmann/John Coltrane album to work, neither did I expect this too. Of course I was wrong in both cases.

br /Tony Bennett has often been thought of as a sub-Sinatra singer, who was a middle road singer without Sinatra gifts. Well on this album and I'm sure on many others he shows the true nature of his talents. A gifted song interpretor who here with Bill Evans at the Piano produces a marvellous performance. Evans of course makes his own unique contribution to the recording. The most important modern Jazz Pianist of the 50's and 60's, here gets a chance to show is skills as an accompanist, as well as playing some lovely solos. This also gives you the chance to hear a lovely version of Bill Evans most famous composition 'Waltz for Debby'.

br /The recording is a duet, so there is no bass and drums, which only highlights the great talents of these two artists. The fact that they work together so well is a tribute to them, and more importantly it gives die-hard Jazz fans a chance to appreciate a vastly under-rated singer and easy-listening fans a chance to understand why Bill Evans is rated so highly.

One of the best CDs of Jazz ballads you are likely to hearClearly these two gentlemen, individually, are legends. How marvellous, then, that they end up collaborating, creating here one of greatest collection of jazz ballads I know.pEvans' piano is perfect. The playful melodic simplicity of some passages is often punctuated with wonderful, but subtle, harmonic twists which are never too challenging to upset the whole flow, but make your soul scream, "yeah!"; classic Bill Evans stuff. The tastefully measured amount of soloing is so musical you sometimes completely forget he's making some of it up as he goes along.pFor Bennett, it seems, this is his finest hour. Working with one of the world’s greatest pianists must be unnerving, but when he’s the only other guy on the record, even more so! However, he rises to the challenge and delivers the most natural, heart-shattering, paralysing and emotionally moving performances. His voice is arguably at its best here than at anytime in his career. He matches Evans for his careful use of musical devices. Indeed, the two musicians seem to approach the project in the same way. You end up with one of the most sublime recordings in vocal jazz.pMy personal favourites on this album are "Young and Foolish" and "Some Other Time"... the way he conveys the sadness in the latter is something quite special - I defy you to find better treatment.pThere is something here for the hardcore jazz fan and the old romantic alike. So, put this on a good hi-fi, sit back, relax and lose yourself completely.pQuite simply, it really doesn’t get better than this.
