Great blend of country, bluegrass and rockThe Nitty Gritty Dirt Band could probably have been more successful than they were if they had stayed in the mainstream. By doing their own thing, they still had a fair measure of success and provided an inspiration for many other artists. This album was their first real classic album although their earlier efforts had shown much promise. While some of the songs here are covers, very few of them were famous when the album was recorded and most still aren't. Even the famous songs sound different here.pThe NGDB at the time comprised Les Thompson (electric bass, mandolin, electric guitar), Jimmie Fadden (lead acoustic and electric guitar, harmonica, washtub bass), Jeff Hanna (rhythm acoustic and electric guitar, drums, washboard, percussion), Jim Ibbotson (rhythm acoustic guitar, lead electric guitar, electric piano, drums, conga, accordion) and John McEuen (banjo, mandolin, acoustic guitar, accordion). All except John contributed vocals.pMr Bojangles (written by Jerry Jeff Walker) became an American top ten hit for the NGDB. Buddy Holly's Rave on is surely the most famous song here even though Buddy's original was only a B-side. The NGDB breathe new life into the old chestnut. Mike Nesmith began his career was the Monkees but wrote many excellent songs in the seventies, two of which (Some of Shelly's blues, Propinquity) are among the covers here. Perhaps more significantly, Kenny Loggins wrote or co-wrote four of the songs (Prodigal's return, Yukon railroad, Santa Rosa, House at Pooh corner). He was just another unknown songwriter at the time but later became a prolific writer of country songs. Given the quality of the songs he contributed to this album, that is no surprise.pIf you enjoy country-rock music of the seventies by the likes of Poco, the Eagles, Gram Parsons and Joe Ely, you might enjoy this - providing, of course, that you don't mind the banjo (I love a good piece of banjo-picking).
