An east coast folkie who came of age with Shawn Colvin, Kaplanksy's own material is rarely up to traditional standards, but she sings her own sometimes clever, sometimes precious tunes with a clear, springy tenor, and her guitar work has the virtues of speed and lightness of touch. Fortunately she chooses covers smartly, with Richard Thompson's "Don't Renege on Our Love" and Nick Lowe's "What's So Funny About Peace, Love and Understanding" being standouts. Since discovering Kaplansky at a gig around a year ago I instantly bought everything she'd put out. I've played this album to death, and it just gets better each time. More varied in tempo perhaps than her other offerings, there are some real gems here. p'This is Mine', captures the magical innocence of childhood and it's often lost outlook on the world. Lucy's previous training as a therapist shines through here, seeing simply what is without becoming overly sentimental.p'The Thief' tells cuttingly of the lackings of a relationship and a partner that she has now seen through. There's an amazing angry defiance here reflected in the quality fo her voice, the lyrics and music. p'Ruby' too really touches me in it's forceful simplicity. There are lyrics here, that even after countless listenings, stop me in my tracks, making me tearful or joyful despite myself.pThis is an excellent album, perhaps particularly if you're new to her music, as I think it demonstrates her varied style well.
