A Superb Compilation
Unlike many of their contemporaries, the Moody Blues could easily fill an exceptionally good double album with their "Best of" - and still leave some tracks missed out. I too bought a Moody Blues Compilation on vinyl and was desparate to listen to it on CD.pThe main reason I wanted to write this review is to emphasise that the two tracks above listed "London Festival Orchestra" are not instrumentals - they are just the backing for the main tracks.pIf you have heard "Nights in White Satin" on the TV or radio - buy this album: the rest of the album is also top notch.pIncidentally, Barclay James Harvest recorded a track called "Poor Mans Moody Blues" - as BJH are no mean band, this is some compliment.

Best Compliation CD Ever
I merely add my second to the notion that this is a compliation that stands above all others. pThe smooth flow from song to song is as if the artists had composed an album, not individual songs, intending them to be played in exactly this order. I originally purchased this on cassette in 1974, and latter on LP. Now, I am buying the CD!!! Greater praise hath none!

Excellent Moodies..... Magical ride with some of their best
This double album/cd is a wonderful compilation of the Moody Blues at their very best. It takes you on a roller-coaster of spiritual and emotional highs. The engineer and producer of this album are to congratulated on their work. They have demonstrated how to blend the sounds of the group and the orchestra in harmony, as well as a perfect transition from one song to the next. Thank you for this collection of wonderful music Raynman

As Good As You'll Get From A 'Best Of' Compilation
'This Is' is meant to be a selection of the best of the Magnificent Moodies from 'DOFP' till 'Seventh Sojourn'. On the good side it left 'EBGDF'largely well alone (which was too bland by far), but unfortunately omitting a couple of classics, in 'Gypsy' and 'Candle Of Life' (I'm biased, as 'TOCCC' is my favourte Moodies album) These tracks could have replaced 'Dear Diary' and 'For My Lady' (although had CD technology existed at the time of the album's release these numbers could have been additions to, rather than replacements for. In saying that, however, 'This Is' is an excellent selection of what the Moody Blues were all about in the earlier years of their live, and prior to Mike Pinder's departure from the band. I've listened extensively to mellotron influenced music but you'll never hear a better example than Pinder in 'The Voyage'...absolutely breathtaking! All the old singles are there (Hayward ones anyway)and as well as these the incredible 'Simple Game', 'Melancholy Man', 'Tuesday Afternoon', 'Watching Waiting' and 'Eyes Of A Child''This Is' has the Moodies at their most harmonious and musically leading edge, and is a superb tribute to the band's formative years. Hayward and Lodge would go on to briefly do their own thing with the Blue Jays and Moraz would replace Pinder for the band's middle and latter years, but, to me, this album is a pearl and fitting summary of the best line up and musically creative quintet. For all you Moodies fans and wannabees this is the album to buy (as well as 'TOCCC')
