My 'evidently' first Yngwie Malmsteen albumWhen I first got my hands on this cd, I had heard a lot about Malmsteen, but never heard ANY of his songs.
br /In fact, I got it very late, because Yngwie cds do not rule cd sales in my country, and are (almost) absent from music shops.. So I got to hear this during the 90's, when Cobain and al were the rage, and crunching the guitars were a means to hide the fact some guitarists were lame.
br /I had however mainly heard that he had a really BIG ego, hated anyone else and that he was not as good as Satriani, Vai, or anyone else who was considered a great guitarist. Reviewers from hype guitar mags were so much into the heavy punk thing that Yngwie was constantly labelled as the least guitar player in the world, although he was still big in Japan..
br /Finally magaging to find this gem, I could easily find out by myself: the guy is great and knew what he was doing, although it took me some time to develop an appreciation.
br /Indeed, this album is great. I totally understand how groundbreaking it must have been. Great guitar playing throughout the songs made me almost dislike the good sungs parts. I totally wished they were instrumentals, but finally got to appreciate the album as it was: GREAT.
br /
br /Since then, Yngwie has released a lot of recordings, but this will remain the ultimate album, as in my head, whenever I listen to it, I know this was one of those rare albums that changed the musical world.

youll need a bass boost stereo :)well... amazing...
br /i got it from amazon, came with bubble rap and invoice,
br /great condition
br /
br /the music is stunning
br /he captured teh essence of renaissance, middle ages, 1600's music so met
br /the album isnt too short, its only 8 tracks a couple being around 6 to 8 minutes long
br /what i didnt like was teh lack of bass guitar sound in teh back ground, it kinda left out some effects, but i turned teh bass boost on, which helped.
br /
br /the sogn with singing
br /... wellll
br /theyre ok, the riffs do sound like neo clasical/speed metal
br /and teh signign is loud and high pitched
br /but it seems they stuggled with the melody goign with teh lyrics.
br /
br /but apart from this
br /this album will make you gasp
br /will make you rage
br /will make you rock out
br /will make you swoon
br /its vicuous
br /its fast
br /its soothing
br /its beautiful

br /great musician ship that only heavy metal, crossed with baroque can bring!

The start of an eraI first (unknowingly) heard Malmsteen in 1983 when I caught the amazing guitaring in 'Hiroshima Mon Amour' by Alcatraz on the radio (although I did not catch the title at the time). Then in 1984, in a bar in Belgium, the bar owner played me a remarkably frantic solo, 'Hot On Your Heels', by "a 19 year old" in a band I'd never heard of, called Steeler. When he told me that it was the player in Alcatraz, something clicked. It made sense that I had picked up on both of them. Not for years had I had any guitarist have such an impact like the guitaring in both tracks. I had to check this guy out...A love affair started and the rest, as they say, is history.
br /
br /Even though he has since spawned a hoard of imitators, at that time, no one was doing anything like this. This almost completely instrumental album was fresh and inspiring.
br /
br /Every track on this album was (and still is) a gem. From the majesty of Black Star, the slighlly corny, but precise baroque of Far Beyond The Sun, the shear beauty of Icarus' Dream Suite (based on Albanoni's Adaggio) and the fury and beauty of Little Savage, this album paved the way for hundreds of wannabes that, even today, never quite master the melody and harmony that the man himself musters, even though others are faster these days...(and so what).
br /
br /Malmsteen certainly has his knockers. But for those who say he has no 'feel', no soul...are they deaf?
br /Beautiful melodies are here in abundance and his heartfelt solos like no other guitarist before him. Sure, he will often play fast. But Malmsteen's fast was different. It was clean, so, so melodic and not just going in one direction like everyone else's 'widdly-diddly' efforts (including my own).
br /
br /His profuse emotion, inherent throughout the fury, is evidently missed by his critics in its subtler form. A guitarists' guitarist true but, not as some have written, the only ones who can appreciate what he does, I'm sure.
br /
br /By his 7th album, Fire and Ice, even I had to conclude that I had heard it all before and, for a while, the love affair was over, but this first outing was the foundation of many great tunes to follow...before he flirted with commerciality and then became a fat parody of himself.

For guitarists only...but damn goodThe problem with artists like Yngwie is that unless you are a good guitarist yourself then you don't appreciate what he is doing on this album! I have been playing 15 years now and can play most of this album...his technique and knowledge of the fretboard leaves me aweinspired!! The trouble with the other reviews here is that the ones who don't like it openly admit to being bad guitarists...yes it is impossibly quick but to a quick guitarist this is to awesome affect, and much like paganini (who was the worlds first shredder...and from whom Yngwie gets major influences it seems to me) it is done in a way that almost requires it! This album has influenced many modern guitarists with both Trivium guitarists putting it in their top five albums of all time, and they're a pretty talented pair...so if you want to get good...listen and take heed!!

Great First Album To OwnFor people like me who have limited knowledge of Yngwie's songs i think this album is a great place to start. From the beautifal guitar work of black star to the amazing Icarus' Dream Suite Opus 4 every song demonstrates Yngwie's diverse and incredible playing skills, a must buy for fans of neo-classical music and ofcourse guitar in general :). Buy It Now!
