He has a wonderful voice, and is tremendous live, and there is not one bad song on this album. Classy, jazzy and very soulful, if you like soul you should enjoy this !
Caught in the middle of a nostalga phase at the moment, I've found Will Downing's self-titled debut album has aged extremely well in comparison to other soul acts circa 1985-90. I remember first hearing of him when he released the "A Love Supreme" single in 1988. Taking the John Coltrane standard, he had added his own lyrics to create a wonderful, superbly exotic and passionate love song.pNot only was the single musically superior - a mean bassline, spine-tingling piano and some gorgeous accompanying sax - but those bass baritone vocals of his were something special. I saw the man the following year (as a 15/16 year old) at Hammersmith Apollo and the man's voice was even more impressive live: for me he won the Pepsi challenge against the other more commercial vocalists of the time. His voice was more evocative and powerful and the material he chose to perform had a certain added classiness about it. Downing's jazzy sensibilities have ensured his music hasn't dated all that much after nearly twenty years - the album as a whole still sounds fantastic.
