My absolute favourite Moody Blues album..........i think. From the release of their debut album "Days Of Future Passed" in 1967 till 1972,s "Seventh Sojourn " The Moody Blues produced seven excellent albums. Arguably the best of the lot (Some days i myself would plump for "Our Childrens Childrens Children") is "Every Good Boy Deserves Favour" their sixth. It was the first Moody Blues album i became intimately familiar with after filching it my fathers collection and every time i hear the incremental intro to "Procession" i want to hear the complete album with no interruptions thank you very much.
br /As with most Moodies albums the song writing , playing and production (Courtesy of the ever present Tony Clarke) are top notch. The largely instrumental "Procession" is piece of music designed to describe the history of music from the beginning of time till the present day and is also the first song written by the entire band. It segues brilliantly with the lightning bolt electricity of "The Story In Your Eyes" , one of the bands greatest songs and for a Justin Hayward penned track a surprisingly up-tempo experience. Ray Thomas also provides one if his strongest songs with "Our Guessing Game", a track that highlights the bands outstanding intricate vocal and harmony work.
br /Again we see a change of perception with John Lodge who usually wrote the bands more rock orientated songs contributing "Emily,s Song"- written for his newly born daughter and its a lovely tippling ballad hat crucially avoids mawkishness. "After You Came" written by Graham Edge returns to the albums central dramatic precept.Built around a stop/start arrangement that feels slightly rushed and once again is shot through with scorching blasts of Hayward's guitar. "One More Time To Live" is the sort of monumental ballad that Justin Hayward would ordinarily write but Lodge again out of character writes. It,s an audacious song and under appreciated for it,s use of an extended middle eight and multi layered vocal work. Without doubt the most ambitious song on the album it,s lyrics culminating in "Salvation, communication, compassion" resonates through the years. What follows rather bizarrely in the context of the music is Ray Thomas,s "Nice To Be Here" which is a lilting hugely melodic ditty about animals playing instruments and consequently comes across as a more sophisticated "Frogs Chorus". Now its , normally the sort of thing i would rather bash my head with breeze blocks than listen to this sort of tweeness but this is oddly charming and beguiling song and is lyrically quite clever.....and you will be whistling it for days
br /The tone turns more portentous and darker with Hayward's brooding ballad "You Can Never Go Home", a song which again showcases again his , in my opinion, hugely under rated vocal prowess. Mike Pinder writes the not surprisingly mellotron heavy "My Song"( Incidentally "Every Good Boy Deserves Favour" was the last Moodies album to feature the mellotron- they used the Chamberlin- a similar instrument on the next album) a swirling eddying exhortation for universal love and acceptance .
br /A great band -How many bands can you think of where every member writes the songs and sings as well as The Moody Blues do?......The Beatles?....Oasis ?(joke). That were never better than they were with "Every Good Boy Deserves Favour" and they were pretty damm good up till then. I,its a mature album exploring metaphysical themes that still retains a glistening commercial sheen but without becoming compromised by it. It,s diverse thematically and musically too and is just a joy to listen to from beginning to end. If you have,nt already do yourself a favour and give it a listen.

MBs, they are deserving favourIt occured more than 30 years ago in 1972 when i was an architectural student in soviet Lithuania. My studys'mate got two Moodys' albums: TO OUR CHILDREN'S... and EVERY GOOD BOY... That was the freshiest music I've discovered then and still listening and rediscovering now. The early Moody Blues are especially light and machismous humanbeing together. It creates especial kind of space. This album is a part of substance that started the golden era of the 70'ties. I think, that the period 68-74 is the similar golden era for MBs, as creators, too. And their Music is imortable.

A favourite album from a favourite groupThis is purely my decision as an avid fan of The Moodies. This album, since I bought it on vinyl in a clearance sale in 1989 to make way for CDs, I have regarded this as one of the best albums of all time. I admit it took a while to get into the record, but once I did I played it incessantly. From the opening track 'Procession' which has all kinds of edits and parts of the album brilliantly mixed and arranged to such a high standard, all songs linked into one - like all their classic early albums -with the superb 'Story in your Eyes', 'After You Came, 'You Can Never Go Home' and the tracks I have not mentioned you have a well constructed, imaginative classic album. I strongly recommend 'EGBDF' to anybody with an inspired musical taste, to give it a whirl. Moody Blues albums, especially from 1966-72, are timeless as are most of the ones that followed.

Fairly good.As with all the post-'69 releases by the Moodies, I'm not all that keen on this one. It does have strong moments, however. The opener, 'Procession', is one of the most interesting pieces the band have done, and its thematic return in 'One More Time to Live' is a memorable song. The album's highlight is, though, 'My Song', the six minute epic album ender. Beginning and ending with a gorgeous piano song, it also has an experimental, instrumental section in the middle, with many different sections.brOverall, the record is more varied than 'A Question of Balance' and 'Seventh Sojourn', which is always a good thing, and the production here is excellent - it sounds very crisp, and the mellotron string sound isn't in such sickening abundance as on 'A Question of Balance'.brThe only problem lies in a few of the songs - 'Emily's Song', 'After You Came' and 'You Can Never Go Home' aren't bad, per se, just somewhat forgettable, and 'Nice To Be Here' is somewhat embarrasing, in both its cheesy melody and atrocious nursery rhyme lyrics.brIt's definitely a patchy album, but stands out to me as their best record since 1969's 'On the Threshold of a Dream'.

The start of the rotThis was the album that made me feel they'd lost the plot. The Moodies were the first band I ever saw play live and up to this point I'd always liked them. However, it has to be said that the best tracks were always Hayward or Hayward/Lodge compositions, and I often felt that all the others were just fillers.pI bought this album when it was originally released, played it for about a week, then couldn't stand it any more. Lyrically I found it lacking or pretentious ('a mouse playing daffodil' please!!!!) and musically it didn't have enough to hold my attention. I can't remember what I did with it now; either swapped it or sold it and I felt they never again captured the magic of earlier albums.
