Pure music
I had this on vinyl years ago, and have just bought the CD. To my mind this is Judy's best album, and it brings back a lot of memories from those days. Most people will know 'Farewell to Tarwathie' (because of the whales) and 'Amazing Grace', but may be unaware that every single song on this album is a gem. I love the pure voice and the arrangements, especially those by Joshua Rifkin. In fact one of my favourite tracks is 'Nightingale II', which is just his instrumental arrangement of Judy's own song 'Nightingale I' minus the voice. 'Nightingale' is Judy's only original composition on this album, which is fine; she is usually better at interpreting other people's songs than writing her own. I particularly like the two Jacques Brel songs, 'Marieke' and 'Sons Of'. (It was through Judy Collins that I first became aware of Jacques Brel, for which I will always be grateful to her. If you haven't checked out the man himself, then you really should.) Hard to pick a favourite. 'Oh, Had I a Golden Thread' is beautiful, but then so are they all. Perhaps if these songs were being recorded today, the sound quality might just be a little better, but never mind; it's the songs and the performances that matter.

Latent Judy Collins fan
I had this album on vinyl back in the 70's and was struck by the lyrical and musical style. Unfortunately the album got accidentally scratched, so i gave it away and never gave it any more thought until recently. Now that I'm 'computerised' I can source CD updates of albums I own on vinyl and this was a 'must have'. I'm actually looking forward to hearing Judy's voice again as I remembered her. Long live Judy!!!

Whales and Nightingales Judy Collins
I love this album. A child of the 60's and a teenager in the early 70's, Judy Collins music invoked (and still does) the life and times of that era. The guitar music, the lyrics and Judy's own unique, haunting voice still have the power to send tingles down my spine. brThe tracks with the whale song in the background are truly innovating and inspiring, and have not dated in the slightest. I defy anyone, no matter how hard-hearted not to be moved by this classic folk album.brThis one has a firm place in my collection forever and I recommend it to anyone who truly values good music.
