Description
Eric B. & Rakim, masters of hip hop minimalism, pioneered the frontier separating old school heroes such as Kool Moe Dee from new school followers like Method Man and Jeru Tha Damaja. A testament to this fact is the duo's often-overlooked third album, LET THE RHYTHM HIT 'EM. Released in 1990, as hip-hop changed guards, the record brought together the relentless boasting of hip-hop's past with the sonic creativity ofits future.
Although narcissistically mesmerised by his own incredible technique, Rakim has reason to sing his own praises. His focused signature monotone delivery coupled withEric B.'s dynamic production style offer many classic tracks. "In the Ghetto" and "Step Back" are impressionist portraits of after-hours urban ambiance, while the title track and "No Omega" pump up the level of musical innovation to that of the duo's seminal effort PAID IN FULL. Unfortunately, as quickly as Eric B. and Rakim rose to the top, they fell from the spotlight after releasing only one more album, 1992's DON'T SWEAT THE TECHNIQUE. Not to be forgotten, LET THE RHYTHMHIT 'EM, released in the early days of gangsta rap and the heyday of Public Enemy's political bombast, is truly a hip hop classic.

Great moment in Hip Hop
This LP represents a truly great moment in Hip Hop. Eric B & Rakim are to Hip-Hop what George Clinton is to funk, and this is them at their finest. Eric B's production was so ahead of its time when this LP was released, and Rakim will probably always be hailed as the most seminal of all MCs.

While I love all four Eric B & Rakim albums, I must confess that some of the tracks from their first two have not dated well and Rakim tries way too hard to be tough on most of the tracks from their fourth - although "Know the Ledge" is surely one of the greatest tracks in hip hop history. On this album they seemed to hit the perfect formula, and every track here remains flawless and timeless 17 years later.

In today's dime-a-dozen marketplace of so called Hip-Hop artists, most so caled "heads" have little to know idea about the heritage of the bastardised popcorn released nowadays. This album would be a good place to start.

As good as the others..........
Since no one has written a review on this yet I feel compeled. This is just as good as the first two, obviously not as pioneering but who besides about 3 groups I can think of has constantly made good albums. Do I hear lyrics.....CHECK. Do I hear beats? CHECK. At the time it came out I feel Hip-Hop was going through a lul and this was an exception. Buy this one and complete the set every hiphead should have. Bye!
