Editorial reviews

From Amazon.com
Jonatha Brooke made her reputation as one half of the Story, a duo whose original folk songs were marked by witty wordplay and sumptuous pop harmonies. After she split with her partner Jennifer Kimball in 1993, Brooke released a solo album (misleadingly credited to "Jonatha Brooke the Story") that replaced the qualities of her earlier work with a too-bald preachiness. Brooke seems to have learned her lesson, for her followup solo effort, I10 Cent Wings/I, is filled with the sort of sly phrases and lush pop arrangements that made the Story so enjoyable. At times Brooke stretches her literary conceits too far, but her keyboardist/producer/arranger/husband Alain Mallet always wraps her appealing melodies in quirky, thickened chamber-pop arrangements. On the best songs--most notably "Glass Half Empty" and "Last Innocent Year"--Brooke has recovered the momentum of a most promising career. I--Geoffrey Himes/I

Jonatha hits her stride
Jonatha Brooke is a criminally underrated singer/songwriter in this country, where we seem to favour the ironic over everything else, but she's one of the best ones around and this is a stunning album. She has a great, bluesy/folksy voice and sings with grace, humour and a keen eye for the human condition, and she sings from the heart. This album, her second real solo release, found her really maturing as an artist, and the songs perfectly complement her voice and the production. I rate it as one of her best and your life will certainly be all the richer for buying it. If you love music, you have no excuse not to. Really, you don't. Go on, you'll be glad you did.

Jonatha's first offical solo album
This collection of music is written and sung (and quite a lot of it played) by Jonatha herself. Truly this is a solo effort, and what an effort! Her past recordings with the band 'The Story' were both floky and rocky at the same time and she leant her soulful, sultry voice to each song to make it her own. With 'Ten Cent Wings' nothing is lost in her performance, but gained. Jonatha has matured both in her musical ability and her style. Each song is a piece written from her heart, which is possibly the reason why she performs so beautifully on each track. brIf you are new to Jonatha, it's a good idea to listen to this record, you will hear a younger her on this record than her later albums, but this does not take away the brilliance to which she tackles each and every note. A great buy you will want to listen to again and again.
