As his hip-hop contemporary DJ Shadow burst out with all guns blazing on UNKLE's sprawling IPsyence Fiction/i project, Japanese auteur Krush claimed the blunter, more obtuse side of trip-hop as his own on his 1998 solo album, IKakusei/i. Krush's compositions hark back, in basic structure, to the spun-out jazz of Mo' Wax's IHeadz/i compilations, but IKakusei/i evades such slick comparisons. "Inorganizm", for instance, invites DJ Kensei and DJ Hide--a pair of underground Japanese soundscapers--to tinker with Krush's locked grooves. Swathed in a skittering atonal hum, it's too icy to chill out to and too fearfully sparse to inspire any more than a doped nod. "The Dawn", meanwhile, offers a nod to hip-hop's foreboding constructions, but left rapless, it's lost in IKakusei/i's enveloping, elaborate abstraction. With more in common with the featureless soundscaping of Autechre or Labradford, IKakusei/i is a foreboding, and unremittingly difficult listen. Peace out to this unique, modern day artist!!!
Anyone who tells you that this is a dry and boring album; don't know what they are talking about, so don't listen to them. This piece of ART: for me, is one of the groundbreaking albums of our time. With the modern style of dub that Krush has managed to capture, sick scratching as always, whilst reserving the right to tranquility and love with the awesome addition of 'The Dawn' put together with the help of that other underated artist: 'Shawn J Period'. This album really has pionereed this hiphop style of music, and especially Krush within the 90's and 00 era.A morbid style remains throughout a number of the tracks, which just adds to the diverse and unique variety of sound to which Krush and Kemuri have adopted for this album.Clean beats,a crisp sound ;especially in 'Final Home'featuring the beutifal vocal of 'Esthero',what more can you ask for? Try labelling this one,this album rocks.Highly recommend it. Peace out to all.

experimental hip-hop at it's best
DJ Krush's 5th album Kakusei takes a much more abstract feel than his other albums, but just proves how talented he is by making this album.brInitially, is wasn't so sure about this album. tracks 1-6 made no sense, and the others were ok at best.brBut the more I listened, the better it became.bri still prefer tracks 7-17, with tracks such as the sublime 'The Drum' featuring Shawn J. Period and Final Home being personal favourites.brIn conclusion this album isn't as accessible as Krush's other works, but that works to it's advantage, growing on you wiht every listen until it becomes embedded in your memory!

Anti-mainstream...and better for it.
This album is the sonic equivalent of a picasso. You see it (or hear in this case) and at first it dsent sound quite right. The almost inaudible and de-constructed sounds that pepper this album at first seem bizare. The beats (which are the stars of the show) almost seem to be made by a drummer with one arm cut off. But, something incredible happens on the second or third listening...it becomes a masterpeice...just like a picasso. The fx bubble over into the beautiful and the beats melt into the sublime. The sounds at first harsh, become like fuzzy old freinds you aint seen since your school days! An album that for once treats it's listeners with respect and doesn't insult their intelligence by throwing in the odd incongruent 'populist' track. This is the where the true dynamic quality of music comes from. If you like DJ Shadow however, and expect this to be a simillar sort of treat, be warned. DJ shodow is almost instantly accsesible genius (like Michallagelo to use another simile) whereas this is the modern art to DJ Shadow's 'classical' art (Jesus! DJ shadow being called old fashioned! Just shows you how 'experimental' this stuff is!)But you will like it! Now go buy (shameless plug!)
