The pianist who made his initial reputation with the famous John Coltrane quartet has long been successful in his own right, and has covered many different bases in his career. Since at least the early 1970s, there's been a notable Afro-Latin element to both his playing and his compositions, but he's seldom made the connection as evident as in this album. With a three- piece percussion section involving Ignacio Berroa on kit- drums plus Giovanni Hidalgo and Johnny Almendra, he locks in his familiar identifiable style and the result is highly exciting. Apart from the piano feature on "Poinciana", however, this is predominantly a band exercise with the front line of Gary Bartz (alto/soprano), Steve Turre (trombone), Brazilian trumpeter Claudio Robiti and Puerto Rican flautist Dave Valentin. Turre is also heard playing his patented conch-shells on "Afro- Blue" and, alongside typical Tyner originals, the Latin- jazz standard "Blue Bossa" closes the show. A group that would be a knockout in the flesh, sounding very good indeed on disc. --IBrian Priestley/I
