Amazon.co.uk ReviewiA Crash Course in Roses/i finds Boston-based singer-songwriter Catie Curtis streamlining the sound that made her 1997 self-titled release a critical breakthrough. Eschewing lush string and horn arrangements, she allows her song-writing and singing to take centre stage on this 13-song set of mid-tempo, acoustic-flavoured folk-pop. An excellent group of musicians (including Morphine drummer Billy Conway) create an intimate backdrop for Curtis's warm, enticing voice. The spare, no-frills arrangements complement the simple honesty of love songs such as "Gave Me Love" and "Magnolia Street". While Curtis clearly works the same musical and emotional terrain as Shawn Colvin and Mary Chapin Carpenter (who sings backup vocals here), she lacks their lyrical and musical bite. These are pretty songs and, taken together, they make for a pretty--though not exceptional--collection. i--Percy Keegan /i

think sarah mclachlan but more folkyIf you know your sarah mclachlan from your jewel and your dar williams from your heather nova then i cant recommend this enough. Its a dead winner for a xmas pressie. There really isn't a bad song on there, they all have their own feel and excellent instrumentation which catie curtis sings superbly too. Its like folk pop but with added emotion...

A gem of a CDMs Curtis is an extremely talented singer / songwriter, who won the hearts of many new fans when opening for Mary Chapin Carpenter this year. For those who were not lucky enough to see her live, here's the next best thing - a collection of songs that actually mean something by a performer with real class. Best track - Magnolia Street - for those lucky enough to have been in that position, this will remind you of how good it was! Weakest track - none of them. A success. Go buy.

Far better than I expected.I saw Catie Curtis as the support act with Mary Chapin Carpenter recently. I liked her enough to buy the CD, but not really expecting much more than nice sounding album from a woman with a remarkable voice. From the very first track the album just builds. It is very understated, without being shallow - the strength coming from her voice and the real hook's in all the songs. Buy it, you will not be disappointed.

Music to feel by !If you like to be able to feel your music, then buy this CD. Catie Curtis has a rare gift for blending deep emotion captivating melody. The more I have listened to these 13 superbly textured tracks, the more I have discovered in them. There is a breadth in Catie Curtis that deserves exposure to the world. Look out for the haunting 'Roses', the melodic and deeply personal 'Magnolia Street' in particular. Outstanding !
