Great starting place
This is the best Buckethead album to buy if you are completely new to him. Songs like 'Jowls' display his amazing speed, whilst 'Who Me?' shows his more laid-back approach that can be heard on 'Colma' and 'Electric Tears'. 'The Ballad of Buckethead' tells his life-story - how he was raised by chickens in a coop and escpaed to become a star. My personal favourite is the funk/rock hybrid 'Night of the Slunk', which, whilst better live, is amazing on here. br / br /'Monsters and Robots' was released at around the time Buckethead (whose real name is Brian Carroll) joined Guns N' Roses. He became better-known, and 'Monsters and Robots' became one of his most popular albums. It strrikes the perfect balance of Buckethead's mad genius that can appeal to many, and his unbelievable technical prowess, which any guitarist can appreciate. Every song is great, but the highlights, for me at least, are: br / br /'The Ballad of Buckethead' br /'Night of the Slunk' br /'The Shape vs Buckethead' br /'Nun Chuka Kata' br / br /If you are new to Buckethead and are wondering what all the fuss is about, then 'Monsters and Robots' is the ideal starting place. Or, if you prefer mellow music, get 'Colma', that has classics such as 'Big Sur Moon' and 'Machete'.

Ideal to get you started on the Buckethead phenominon
Monsters And Robots is an ideal Buckethead album for people new to his music wanting to check him out. It's a bit easier to listen to than his older stuff, it's well produced and not so much a concept album like his previous releases.brIndeed the album was released around the time of his joining hard rock legends Guns N' Roses, and it was indeed probably released to capture this potential new fan base. Music is business, no matter what your moral values may be, in order to keep producing his music he needs to be able to make a living, fortunately for us AND Buckethead, Axl Rose came along with this offer as a perfect opportunity for Buckethead to display his technical and artistic prowess. brI say again, this is easily the most accessable album of his, it is by no means a bad album and will hopefully strengthen Bucketheads fan base and support so that he may remain with us for many years to come.

This album is a patchy affair...
..from guitar god Buckethead (aka Brian Carol)brThere is quite a lot of reworked tunes from previouse albums (that are rare). Released in 99 not long after the announcment of him being in Guns N' Roses, if you wanted to be cynical it seems as if it was intended to capitalise on the new market place. Les Claypool supplying a lead vocal here goes to make this a cd intended to introduce Buckethead for the mainstream.brAll that said though there is much to recomend it. Nunchuka Kata is a great track, Ballad of Buckethead is funny, Night of the slunk is a mindnumbing techno-rock hybrid.brThe reworked songs..Jumpman, Jowels etc..are some of Bucketheads best tunes.pThe main problem here is the lack of great lead guitar. This release can be best described as quirky Techno-Thrash, - Guitar solo's. The overtly Electronic nature of the album takes away from B.Heads real talent which is: Brilliant fretwork, from frantic shred to beutiful soulful guitar lines.brThe production is very heavyhanded and most of the reworked songs were presented better elsewhere.pThis however is still a decent cd, not a essential purchase but still good. Nicely packaged too.brFor the newbie i recomend Giant Robot instead of this, Bucketheads sci-fi Masterpiece.

Buckethead + Commercialism = Bad
This is Bucketheads first real attempt at appealing to a more commerical market.pMany of the songs on this album are re-recordings of older more raw songs (and IMO it was better that way) and therefore if you are allready a buckethead fan the album wont be anything you havent heard before.pBut then this album wasnt for you, it was for newbies, for Primus fans and for GNR's fans, for people who dont *get* what Buckethead is about, forgetting John Zorn's philiosphy he seems to have let the lure of fame go to his head on this one.pThe songs are over-produced and improvisation is non-exsistant here, and most disturbing to fans of Buckethead he changed his whole image !, no longer is he the Johnny Sokko inspired superhero now he's some demented psyco locked in a chicken coop (thanks to the ramblings of Les Claypool no doubt).pAlso making an apperance on this album is DJDISK,personally I hate the guy, he should have stayed with the Skratch Picklez instead of infecting Bucketheads recent recordings with his tripe scratching nonsense, but no doubt to Bucketheads band El Stew he felt oblidged to let him have a go over this cd.pI can only feel joy that he still records under Travis Dickerson's label because releasing cd's like this seriously threatens to lose Bucketheads cult fanbase.pOnly excuse for buying this is to complete your collection or for fans of DJDISK.

First taste of Buckethead
I'm a fan of Guns n' Roses and since Buckethead has joined the band I thought I'd check out some of his earlier solo work. And I have to say I was quite pleased. The first track "Jump Man" is one of my favorites on the album. It features some up-tempo and amazing guitar work from Buckethead and is very catchy. "The Ballad of Buckethead" is track 3 on the album. Its all about Bucketheads life and how he grew up.The lyrics to this song are printed in the sleeve. My favorite track is track 7 "Who Me" which is played on aucositc guitar its the softest song on the album and a great track to playing along to. This album is not as mellow as "Colma" with some songs being ideal for a horror film but if your looking for a demonstration of how talanted Buckethead is then this is a good album to own.
