Amazon.co.uk Review
Bill Withers has written two bona fide classics ("Ain't No Sunshine" and "Lean on Me"), recorded a slew of memorable hits, and had songs covered by everyone from Joe Cocker to Isaac Hayes to Kiss. Still, he's under-appreciated. His voice is smooth, his singing is subtle, and his songs move along over sinuous, sexy grooves. It's all so effortless that it's easy to overlook how substantial Withers' work really is. Never flashy, his best songs burn with a heat that lingers long after the last note has been played. This collection brings together a few songs from his remarkable early-1970s albums, including such hits and near hits as "Grandma's Hands," "Who Is He? (And What Is He to You?)" and the seriously funky "Use Me," as well as some gems from the later 70s (including "Lovely Day"). --Percy Keegan

Nectar for the ears
You can listen to this album anywhere you like. In the car, at home with a loved one, over dinner with friends or in a cafe/restaurant and the feeling is always the same. Washed over with good feelings and ambience second to none. The songs never date and you find yourself either singing along to them or tapping the wheel or nodding your head. You even think, "Didn't know he recorded this one!!" during one or two of them.
A great album featuring an underestimated and under exposed artiste.

Bill, I could kiss you
Unless I'm mistaken, and I dont think I am, this man wrote every single song ever written, excluding all the bad ones and a few I wrote when I was seven. I recently lost all my limbs and most of my face in a freak fishing accident and i heard this album in the waiting room and i forgot all my troubles. This could happen to you too, and its at a price many can afford on this site. look out for 'grandma's hands, lean on me, aint no sunshine, lovely day and just the two of us.' If your worried bout the age in which this was written, "no need" is what I exclaim to you, I am a fit and and healthy, good looking, cool and smart 18 year old rich kid, and I give Bill as many thumbs up as humanly posible... two.

Mellow but funky soul music
Bill is actually remembered for very few hits of his own, but his songs are popular among other singers, who record cover versions and sometimes have hits with them. This is one of several compilations that allow you to hear Bill sing his own songs in his own particular style.

Of Bill's songs, Lean on me is the one that is most frequently covered. It is a classic, anthemic song that can be interpreted as a love song or as a gospel song, while its basic simplicity allows it to be adapted to many different musical styles. Nevertheless, among Bill's own hits, the first one that comes to mind is actually Lovely day, partly because others have had a hit with Lean on me (so people who know the song don't always associate it with Bill) and partly because Lovely day is such a fantastic song anyway.

But Bill's great songs don't end with Lean on me and Lovely day - Ain't no sunshine, Just the two of us, Use me and Grandma's hands are just a few of the other great songs here and on other Bill Withers compilations.

you need this on a sunday morning
what a great cd to wake up to. Chilled mellow but with that funky beat. If you have not heard of bill withers you will have heard many of the tracks that are on this album and not even realised it. Probably because they have been covered by people like tracy chapman, will young, will smith etc etc etc. As most of us know the origanals are always the best.
classics: lovely day, just the two of us, ain't no sunshine
if you want real sunshine then buy this
