'Sing to the Lord a NEW Song...' Isaiah 42:10 (NIV)
Don't get me wrong - I am a Methodist and love singing Hymns. Furthermore, I have come to the conclusion that, if God spoke, he would speak in the androgynous voice of a choir in song! br / br /However, this collection of Hymns are ones you will have heard 100 googolplex times before. Not even relatively modern songs, such as 'How Great thou Art' have made it in, and it seems to me that this CD must have been the favourites of those twee old people you meet in some churches. br / br /Furthermore, go back 100 years, and the content of these CD's would be identical. All the hymns use the same melodies that were used 100 years ago, and nothing is done to bring in any modern influences whatsoever. br / br /Of course all the songs are sung to a high standard and the harmonies are flawless, but this is precisely what makes these hymns SO boring - passionate modern songs flow and adapt and are innovative. These hymns revel in being exactly (to the note) the same as the song-sheet which means they become boring after just hearing two! br / br /Anyhow, that's my two cents on the issue - these hymns are far better sung that they are listened to. For them to work on CD, something extraordinary needs to happen to them... br /...And this is where you come in - if you are a fan of hymns, then please remix them, play with them - anything! Scrap the organ, jazz up the singing then record the result - THAT is what makes Great Worship music... br /Fidelity is over-rated. If you don't believe me, listen to some Hillsong find where innovation can take you...

Inspiring Collection
I have often listened to church music thinking to myself is it all manifested in the same place and released under different titles? However this selection 'hits the spot' with some great renditions of worshipful music and if you like to listen to part singing then cd 1 is excellent. There also some lovely descants some of which i had not heard before, an inspiring selection. Excellent.

Excellent!
Excellent quality, and a good selection of hymns to choose from. Was very impressed, and would recommend to anyone looking for a CD (or two!) of British hymns.

Oldies but Goodies
As a Methodist churchgoer I support the use of a wide range of music in worship but it's a delightful indulgence to listen to 50 old hymns here. Some of the recordings are well over 40 years old, which means that the 'arranged' hymns sound a bit dated, but the performances nicely balance fervour and restraint, depending on what's needed. One thing I particularly like is the inclusion, along with a great many general favourites, of a significant number of hymns for specific seasons in the Christian Year. For the most part you get the tune you expect, though I personally prefer Blaenwern for Love Divine. Recommended both to the practising Christian and the listener who regards church music in the same light as general nostalgia.

Mixed bag
Despite being a teenager I found this to be a highly comprehensive collection of music. However, some of the tracks were a little tepid, not quite the rousing inspirational anthems that they could be. But when it hits the spot, as frequently happens on CD1, music listening could get little better.
