Furthering its reputation as a label that releases the best in experimental hip-hop and abstract beats, Ninja Tune brings you The Herbalizer. Led by South Londoners Jake Wherry and DJ Ollie Teeba, the band's second album, Blow Your Headphones, is a schizophrenic concoction of jazz horns, old school grooves, and punchy vocals that sits comfortably alongside the music of more illustrious stable mates Coldcut and DJ Food. As their name suggests, The Herbalizer have created a blunted, sample-laden record that offers a whole lot more then just background tunes for the new generation. Their music is an infectious and vibrant mix of cool influences. From the gun slinging introduction of the "Opening Credits" and the brassy funk of "Mr. Chombee Has The Flaw" to the lounge room freestyling of "Hardcore", Blow Your Headphones is a sonically textured album that sets a mood, not suits it. --George Lees.

Hip Hop reaches new levels
Truely a fine album. The herbaliser have established their roots in creating an album that never ages and always uplifts.

Excellent turns from What What. If you want something that sounds cool, feels cool and is cool then this is the album for you. A fusion of hip hop and jazz.

Its easy to be pigeon music and to tie it down. The Herbalizer ollie Teeba and co take alot of hip hop, funk, jazz and whatever, else takes their fancy and serve up an albums of highs and highs. From The Blend onwards the album intriges shakes and moves. This may not be to everyone tastes and avoid the follow up album (very mercenary) at all costs, but if you like other ninja tune realises or jazz/funky hip hop this is a must if only for mr Chombee takes the flaw.

great album. i would have given this 5 stars except for track 12 which is soo truly awful and cringeworthy it loses a whole star, the rapping on this is pathetic and juvenile, i just cant see why this track was included its so below the level of everything else. in fact when putting this album on as upbeat background music, this track is enough to make listeners stop listen and change cd, one wise choice was to place it as track 12. the rapping is the weakest part, both lyrics and delivery are very third rate. luckily the musci and production are first rate, and the rapping is at a minimum.

Blow(s) your mind!
This LP is sooo good... better though stylistically similar to Very Mercenary, it is THE perfect blend of sample-based, old skool hip-hop beats, downtempo trip-hop and dancefloor breakbeat. The vibe of the album remains constant despite the variety of music styles incorporated within it, so it all flows together without getting at too repetitive or boring. I don't know if What What is an established/well-known MC - I hadn't heard of her before listening to this - but, appearing on 3 tracks on this album, she is undoubtedly the best, most natural/genuine female rapper I've ever heard. Highly recommended.
