a little known talent
I first heard "Willie McBride" in a pub in Devon, years ago. I've been looking for it for years. Not helped by the fact that is not the title of the song, which is "no man's land". Whatever, that song alone justifies buying this CD. Talk about "not a dry eye in the house". The rest of the songs are funny and / or folksy. Just the sort of thing you might hear in a pub in Devon, if you were lucky!

Bogle brings joy and sadness to those who really listen.
Bogle provides folk melodies and lyrics full of social commentary and wisdom which will stay with the listener long after the music has stopped. His love of Australia and Scotland are presented often linked to important people in his life. Lady of Bendigo and belle of broughton reminise of two women across both continents. Never one to shy from a harsh reality his song of a battered wife of an alcoholic husband is presented in the touching 'Glasgow Lullaby'. While the struggle and pain of poverty are the essence of 'Mary and Me'. Glimpses into his own pain from his turbulent relationship with his father is describe 'In 'no use for him' here he reflects on the father he never really got to know. It contains some of his best work. A treasure like 'No Mans Land' a song so well known under different guises i.e. Willie McBride or Green Fields of France. This tribute to a generation lost in the futility of war is often known rather as an anti war poem rather than in its original and best version as an anti war song. Humouris a key part of Erics work is amply displayed in his comic songs. Aussie Bar B Que is a fine example of this. The album goes from traditional whaleing songs to thought provoking social commentary. If you buy this CD then it will not be last Eric Bogle you buy. This early work of Eric Bogle is a wonderful introduction for new listeners. Oh to be starting out agin collecting each new piece of work as it is produced. Enjoy.
