Soul and Power! This is roots harmony at its very best. The Wailing Souls at the top of their game! Though their Studio One offerings take some beating, the vocal subtleties of this Joe Higgs inspired quartet are showcased here with uplifting effect. Self-produced and backed by the likes of Sly Dunbar on drums, Ranchie McLean on bass and a peerless horn-section led by Vin Gordon, Rico Rodriguez and "Deadly" Headly Bennett, this is surely a seminal album. As a vinyl purist it's torture to see the dub vesions on this new CD release that were left off the original Island LP in 1979.
If you love roots rockers and don't already own this, what are you waiting for? Put on "Feel the Spirit", fire one up and get with the Wailing Souls. Brilliant!

Roots reggae harmoniesWailing Souls-fantastic roots music featuring many classics. Unfortunately there has been a number of albums released that means you may end up owning some tracks more than once. This is why this album only gets 4/5.
This is however a fine set and its strengths lie in the fact it showcases the trio's musical diversity. It is not only roots rockers on show here. There are a number of sweet harmony tracks which remind me of the Mighty Diamonds and even early Bob Marley in a few places! Not a bad thing.
This is as good an introduction to the Wailing Souls as any reggae music lover could ask for.Highly recommended.

Driving beat, delicious vocal harmoniesWailing Souls were a band that hardly ever missed out. Their formula was driving beat, sweet melodies and delicious vocal harmonies.
Wild Suspense is nearly as good as Fire House Rock and the CD reissue includes dub versions of the songs. You have no real excuse, then, to purchase it.

Mellow and ComfortingThis is a bit of an armchair and slippers job - I find the wailing souls very familiar and nourishing. There are other edgier offerings out there, stuff that changed and defined eras or musical movements - whereas this is steady-eddy-reggae - but it has a place in my life! Sweet.

Brilliant Late 70s Roots ReggaeWhen Bob Marley died the Wailing Souls were one of the bands touted as being likely successors. Listening to this album it's easy to see why! Outstanding harmonies; wonderful rhythms; super dub versions of 7 tracks.
If you are looking to extend your reggae collection beyond Bob Marley, buy this now.
If you enjoy this album as much as I did why not try Firehouse Rock by the Wailing Souls, which is just as good but in a more dancehall style.
