Accomplished
An accomplished collection which showcases his not inconsiderable talent as a composer while proving how great his voice really is when supported by the right material and sympathetic production. Cohesive and melodic, the album offers prime performances on the anguished ballad Cry For Help which builds up to a really soulful crescendo, and the catchy, uptempo Be With You. All in all he succeeds in reaching emotional sophistication and proving that there's life after SAW.

Free as a Bird...
Released after a long gap of nothingness after the release of his 3rd single from his 2nd album way back in 1989, Rick releases his first album post-PWL. Is it any good? This is an album and not a pool where you pick off singles to be released like his first 2 albums. All the songs are good and solid and there are no weak ones. He goes towards blue-eyed soul, pop, rock, piano jazz and the like. There are a couple of solid musicians on this album and the big band feel is maintaned with brass, strings and ivory. Mark King, Rob Fisher, Micheal McDonald comes on to help him out with the writing duties while Gary "Go West" Stevenson comes on board to fill the golden boots of SAW. It's a good album, I mean you can just pop it in the CD tray and listen to it non-stop. There are no dance tracks here just pure simple rock songs like Is This Really Love, This Must Be Heaven, Be With You and others. Cry For Help is the best track in terms of overall completeness plus a bit of gospel. The vocals are strained in some places. I guess somebody forgot to patch it up. Overall, I enjoyed this album. It's not an album that you can take to a disco floor but in its own right, it's good. A much better effort than his 2nd album and certainly Rick Astley will be respected as an artist now more than ever.

better than his stock aitkin and waterman stuff!!
This is Rick Astleys third album. I found the songs, "cry for help", "move right out"and "in the name of love" all very good and was expecting much of the same from the album. All the songs were not a disappointment to me, but being a fan of Rick's this probably doesnt come as a suprise! The music was up beat, good pop music with one mushy slow song, "behind the smile". "The bottom line" reminds me of the sort of thing you'd hear in a jazz club for some reason, maybe the spoken lines at the end of the song. Over all i liked the album, although not as much as i enjoyed his 4th album "the ones you love", which i felt was his best work yet, (this is not to say i wouldnt change my mind if he releases the rumored new album later this year!).
