And to think that i might never have discovered this album.
Only discovered this fabulous album by accident, after investing next-to-nothing in a copy of the double LP found in a charity shop. I'm neither a world-music buff nor a particular fan of Brazilian music, and only gave it a spin out of curiosity. One play was enough to make me realise that it's a very special record. br / br /The album is credited as being a Milton Nascimento/Lo Borges collaboration, who share most of the lead vocals, but others help out on the songwriting. The overall result is a very eclectic mix of Brazilian music with Beatlesish pop/rock influences. Some of the songs are very sombre and downbeat ("Cais", "Dos Cruces", "Os Povos"), others so incredibly joyful and uplifting that they will literally cleanse your soul. Sounds a bit over-the-top? Buy this cd and you'll see what i mean. The instrumental title track (final track of the first LP) which leads into "Paisagem da Janela" (first track of the second LP) is a pure, total delight. Likewise, the sad "Trem de Doido" gives way to the fabulous "Nada Sera Como Antes". br / br /A magical album which can be recommended to anybody who is willing to try something a bit different.

Milton's magic
Milton Nascimento is one of the best singer-song writers from Brazil. He started his career during the military dictatorship and his work survived heavy censorship and state violence to become part of history of Brazil. For anyone interested in music, and history, this album is a must. One of the best albuns ever made in Brazil and the world. If you don't know his work, try this and you will soon realize why he has influenced people like Wayne Shorter, Paul Simon, Duran Duran and others. My personal favourite is Clube da Esquina. The music is rich, sad and melodic, and the lirics are a denounciation of suffering, while at the same time giving hope.
