This CD both pleases and disappoints. There are excellent but far too lengthy highlights from Carmina Burana and Schulwerk. These offer a good impression of the wide range of musical styles in both works but by their very length leave virtually no time for Orff's other works, the excerpts from Der Mond and Die Kluge being no more than token gestures, and not the best tracks to pick to typify two full-scale operas, either. Far better to have picked a smaller selection of tracks from a wider selection of works to justify the "Best Of" tag rather than the more apt "Most Popular Of" hybrid that has resulted.pThat aside, the recordings are excellent. Carmina Burana does not come across too grandiose or pompous, and Schulwerk keeps faith with its original orchestration for a small ensemble with instruments suitable for young musicians, giving it an ethereal, almost innocent quality. Overall, an excellent introduction to Orff, but you will have to buy the Der Mond/Die Kluge CD separately to realise that there's more to Orff than Carmina Burana, outstanding as it is.
