Popular Italian-American balladeer
Al Martino, born and raised in America by Italian parents, began his career in 1952 but was still recording new music more than fifty years later. Some of his recordings are more popular in America while others are more popular in Europe.

Al's first record, Here in my heart, topped the American charts for three weeks in the summer of 1952. When UK sales charts began in November of that year, it was there at number one, where it stayed for nine weeks.

In America, Al's fortunes quickly faded. The follow-up, Take my heart, peaked at twelve. Two minor hits followed then Al disappeared from the American charts for several years. In Britain, Al was more successful. Take my heart, Rachel, Now, Wanted and The story of Tina all made the UK top ten. The man from Laramie only just made the UK top twenty, losing out to a rival version by Jimmy Young, which made number one. Al then disappeared from the UK charts for a while.

Al never gave up and eventually made a comeback in 1963, only this time it was in America where he made the most impact. His comeback started with I love you because, which became a minor UK hit for Al but became a top five UK hit the following year for Jim Reeves. In America, Al's version did far better and was followed by other hits including Painted tainted rose, To the door of the sun, Mary in the morning, Volare and Spanish eyes. His other American hits from the sixties are omitted from this set. None of these hits charted for Al in the UK at the time, though Spanish eyes later became a minor UK hit in 1970 and (finally) a UK top five hit in 1973.

This collection contains all of Al's British hits except one (the minor hit Summertime - recorded for a different record label in 1960) and most of his other classic songs.
