This is the best childrens adventure story...Imagine... Mum said "OK, here's a boat, tents and food"... then sailing on your own to... Wildcat Island!... Where the adventure really begins...

A Fantastic Childhood Adventure!Unfortunately i have not read the book 'Swallows and Amazons' by Arthur Ransome, however i really didn't need too, to be able to enjoy this film. It really is a great childrens film and i am actually quite suprised that i had never heard of it before this.
It is about a group of children who go camping on an island with a boat called 'Swallow'. While they are there they have many adventures, among them is their meeting with some pirates, whose boat is called 'Amazon', and together they declare war on a grumpy man who refuses to play with them.
Like 'The Railway Children', i can warm to every character in this film straight away, and i almost felt as though i wanted to be there with them, sailing the boat around the island, and cooking eggs at the camp fire.
All-in-all a nice little childrens film which can be watched by the whole family, as it is completely clean, i.e there is not swearing or suggestive coments, which is a great rareity in todays society. Definatley a film for your collection.

The Script That Almost Wrote ItselfIf you enjoyed the Railway Children, you'll love Swallows & Amazons. The Walker children (the Swallows) go on a boating holiday in the Lake District, and when trouble looms with the local pirates (the Amazons), they decide to settle the score with a boating battle. But whilst this battle is going on, a far more serious event is uncovered by the one of the Walkers.
The film's success relies not so much on the plot but on the vivid reproduction of both place and period and the superb casting. Ransome himself wrote that he did not feel that he had written the book. It almost wrote itself.

excellent adaptation.Until J K Rowling came along there was, in my opinion, no greater teller of stories for children than Arthur Ransome.
Film versions of books are seldom as good as the original books, and this is so in this case, but it's still very good indeed. The film captures the spirit of the book very well. The original story is brilliant and the young actors and actresses do a great job.
The fact that the places shown in the film are, in the main, real places that can still be visited today only serves to increase the enjoyment of the film. Arthur Ransome had an uncanny ability to write about places where the changes which have occurred in the last seventy years or so have been mainly superficial. This makes it easy to take a little trip back in time.

A fantastic adventure for all ages!
A brilliant adaptation of Arthur Ransom's famous book with wonderful scenery of the Lake District. A fabulous storyline which takes you back to the innocence of childhood summer holidays. A classic film to watch again and again!
