Amazon.co.uk ReviewThe 1994 box-office hit that turned comedy maniac Jim Carrey into Hollywood's first $20-million man, this gag-filled no-brainer stars Carrey as the titular rubber-faced gumshoe who tracks down lost pets for his heartbroken clients. Ace's latest case involves the apparent kidnapping of the Miami Dolphins' team mascot, Snowflake the dolphin. His investigation is a source of constant aggravation for Miami police lieutenant Lois Einhorn (Sean Young), who turns out to be packing more than a pistol under her skirt. IFriends/I fans will appreciate the presence of Courtney Cox, who remains admirably straight-faced as the Dolphins' publicist and Ace's would-be girlfriend, but of course it's Carrey who steals the show with shameless abandon. One viewing may suffice for a lot of people, but Carrey's hyper antics made IAce Ventura: Pet Detective/I one of the bestselling videos of the 1990s. --IJeff Shannon, Amazon.com/I

what a comedy should bePet detective Ace Ventura (Carrey) is assigned to track down Snowflake,
br /the mascot of football team The Dolphins before the Superbowl.
br /
br /Jim Carrey, the man. Whether you love him or hate him you cannot deny
br /his comic talent. In this 1994 crime comedy he plays a smart crazy pet
br /detective who has the best catchphrases of any character, of any
br /comedy, of any film, of anyone, ever.
br /
br /Opening with a delivery man kicking a package and destroying it with
br /every step he takes and you feel as if you know this person and you
br /simply have to love him for it. His character never slackens, always
br /entertains and gets funnier with every scene. He is a comic master and
br /he is this film.
br /
br /Carrey's performance does take the shine off a well written plot. The
br /script is a great incentive for Ventura to be wacky and spontaneous.
br /
br /The pursuit of a missing dolphin is interesting, if not quite as
br /intense as it should be. We see Ventura using his 'skill' and his
br /'charm' to give the older viewers plenty of laughs where the slapstick
br /moments are undoubtedly aimed towards younger generations, however
br /years on it is still as funny as when I was young. The sarcastic yet
br /sophisticated undertones still remain classic.
br /
br /Flowing all the way through, this nineties comedy follows the mad
br /detective in an intriguing investigation. There are lapses in the
br /majority of modern comedies where the stereotypical hero has to redeem
br /himself to find the answer and everything is super come the final piece
br /but there are many twists and turns and a difference in the comic
br /formulaic style here which gives the film a uniqueness that required
br /Carrey's special touch. No clichés, stereotypes or cringing romance
br /sequences that don't shine off the plot, unless you count the atrocious
br /made for money sequel.
br /
br /The supporting cast are good enough to add some extra laughs but they
br /are always standing in Carrey's superior shadow.
br /
br /Sharp, witty and exceptionally funny, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective
br /justifies the genre and is worth watching whatever age you may be.

By far the funniest film you will ever see...Where do I begin? Ace is just so hilarious, every second that he appears on the screen should have you laughing out loud. The storyline is full of brilliant twists, the jokes are stupid enough to be satisfying to nearly anyone with a decent sense of humour, and Jim Carrey provides his usual mad antics and stupidity that really make this film such a great laugh.

the best movie ever!!!I must have watched this movie thirty times in one month during college! A true classic script and especially performance by Jim Carrey, with nonstop manic nonsense and madness. Filled with tons of hilarious one liners and quotables from Carrey. I think it's Carrey's funniest performance, with Liar Liar second, and The Mask third. This was him making it to the big time as a comic actor and he holds nothing back. Author of Adjust Your Brain: A Practical Theory for Maximizing Mental Health.

A hilarious classic! If you ever want to watch a really insane film which will make you laugh, then this is it. I enjoy most Jim Carrey films and although this one is some years old, it never fails to make me chuckle. It has quite a clever plot, i.e. Carrey plays a pet detective, whereby people hire him to find their pets or animals. They may have been stolen, kidnapped or otherwise, but by hook or by crook, Ace Ventura will find and return the creature to its rightful owner.
br /
br /The film's charm is mainly in Carrey's idiocy. His talent for pulling stupid faces and generally being a moron is amazing. I'm guessing being on a film set with him would have you holding your sides most of the time. But it makes the film, because the character of Ace Ventura is a lovable idiot, and in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective he certainly saves the day by returning the missing mascot of a football team just in time for their Superbowl game.
br /
br /If you hate Carrey (as many do) then don't watch this film. But if you like him, or you're indifferent, it's a laugh a minute and you have to admire the guy for happily making an idiot of himself on camera for the public's enjoyment.

Pet DickDirector Tom Shadyac went on to work with Jim Carrey on two more films, but this puerile comedy is the best. Essentially it's a vehicle for Jim Carrey's energetic, gurning brand of childish slapstick - Courtney Cox, Udo Kier et al wisely play it dead straight and allow the obnoxious pet detective to poke fun at them. It makes for often hilarious viewing: the vigour with which Carrey throws himself into his endless caricatures is freakishly fascinating to watch.
