Very Disappointing, Could have been so much betterA CGI version of Washington Irving's story "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow", there's no way it could possibly fail. Well, to cut a long story short, it did.
Night of the Headless Horseman never gets off the ground mainly because the Horseman storyline is almost a subplot to the tepid love triangle, therefore the Horseman is hardly in it and he leaves much to be desired when he does show up. Instead of the silent and sinister Horseman that Tim Burton gave us in his far superior version of the story, we have a Horseman wielding a pumpkin, cackling like a Disney villain and stringing out a bunch of "unstoppable bad guy" lines E.G. "SO BE IT!!"
The script is a monotonous, cliched, stuttering mess that could have been so much better had the lines been delivered quicker, with more humour and none of the long silences between lines. Ultimately the actors do sound as though they are struggling with the unadventurous material.
As far as the story goes you have to wonder what Katrina Van Tassel sees in Brom Bones or Ichabod Crane, or indeed what either of them see in her. Brom is an utter bully, Ichabod is a complete wimp who can't seem to say a sentence without stumbling and Katrina is a completely by-the-numbers love interest. The cast don't really add anything of interest to their characters but I doubt that it's any fault of theirs, we can blame the script again. Also the word 'Hessian' is mis-pronounced.
Well the CGI's got to be impressive. Right? Wrong! The characters faces don't seem to move and their moves are very wooden. Also the same pieces of footage are played again and again, sometimes in reverse! We see the same piece of footage of the Horseman at least half a dozen times, the battleground scene 3 times and the scenes of the spirits rising up from their graves twice.
The gory scenes, the story of how the Horseman lost his head and Ichabod's dream are the only saving graces, however, nothing happens for too long and all interest is lost.
The ending is deeply unsatisfying and the whole affair leaves a bitter taste and could have been so much more. If you want a better version of the story, buy Tim Burton's 'Sleepy Hollow'. It's far better!!
