really quite good
Biber wrote sometimes complex, sometimes funny, sometimes achingly beautiful music. Chronologically he pops up just before Bach; sonically, his sound-world is unique. Here are twelve sonatas which he titled "as much for the altar as for the table" and each one does indeed shift and turn, go here and then there - hard to explain, but shifts in tone and melody, where fragments from one section echo in the next, creating a real sense of movement. Holman, Goodman and the Parley of Instruments summon up yet another perfect performance, virtuosity from Crispian Steele-Perkins when needed and ensemble balance when this is what the music demands. At such a bargain price, you should bring this piece of beauty into your life.
