Editorial reviews
Amazon.co.uk ReviewWhatever happened to the Stereo MC's? After winning a Brit award in 1993 for their fun and seminal "Connected" album, they seemed to disappear without trace. Seven years later, there's still no sign of a new album, despite repeated assurances over the years to the contrary.
Stereo MCs: DJ Kicks may not be the follow-up album we're all waiting for, but it is the next best thing--a non-stop DJ mix from British hip-hop's long-lost sons. As mix albums go, it's a bit of a cracker. There's a rough and ready, funked-up party feel to proceedings, thanks largely to the Stereos' impeccable live mixing and eclectic track selection. In an action-packed hour, Rob B and the Head incorporate everything from old school hip-hop, disco and instrumental funk to jazzy break-beat and obscure orchestral pop. They even find space for a new, three-part Stereo MC's composition, "Rhino" [amazingly, their first new material since 1995]. Like all brilliant mix albums, there's never a dull moment, and each new track is as essential as the last. Great tunes, great mixing and a bunch of new Stereo MCs tracks. What more could you want? --

DescriptionFans of the Stereo MC's who have been waiting since 1992 for a follow-up album to their brilliant and acclaimed CONNECTED may be somewhat disappointed to discover that this is a mix compilation. Our only advice to them is: don't be. Here you will find a jewel box of beats and breaks, and in amongstthem two original tracks by the Stereos themselves. The mixopens with what sounds like a recording of a child at a yard sale before launching auspiciously into "Moon Trek" by theMike Theodore Orchestra from 1977--a funky and dramatic overture to the blend of hip-hop from both sides of the Atlantic, with and without rapping.
The old school rap is represented by Kool G Rap & DJ Polo's "Road To The Riches" and theDisco Four's "Do It, Do It" while the more avant-garde material from the UK comes in the form of the Herbaliser and RedSnapper. If you are a confessed "beathead", then there is aplethora of styles here, all united by big, phat beats, so effectively used by the MC's in their own productions. So, while you're waiting to be "re-connected", get DJ KICKS.
From the Labelpress quotes"...features old skool, Brit-hop, Viennese spliff-hop, soundtracks... Superb? Yes." Mixmag May 2000
"... this eclectic boogaloo hangs better than a bespoke Armani suit." Jockey Slut Apr 2000
"One thing's for sure: they're hard, and this compilation doesn't compromise - like it or f*** off." Ministry Apr 2000

If you are in any doubt, read this.....OK, first and foremost I must justify my doing this review - I have never written a review for an album on Amazon and that in itself should be enough to make you realise how genuine I am.
I am also a Stereo MC's fan and have all their albums but what you are looking at here is DJ Kicks, if you read any DJ Kicks album cover you will understand what it's all about, but for our French friend I will try to explain - you take one or two well respected DJ's and a recording studio and you ask them to mix favourite tracks and influential artists, the end result should not only reflect their musical genre but should present a fusion of pleasurable listening.
Kruder and Dorfmeister did it perfectly and of all the DJ Kicks albums I have Stereo MC's match K&D's ability to chill my spine. With the opening choice of the Mike Theodore Orchestra, the wickid Troubleneck Brothers, Kool G, Ultramagnetic MC's, Freddy Fresh.....How can anybody not love this album?
I disagree that it is nothing like Stereo MC's - do you not own their first album Supernatural? Well go out and get it. With DJ Kicks, the Stereo MC's have literally put the FUN back into Funk and produced an album that'll get you dancing whether you're in the lounge, club, car or gym - if you've got this far, you may as go all the way - enjoy!
