Amazon.co.uk ReviewIt took a while for Marvel Comics'
X-Men to make it onto the big screen, but in retrospect they were always an obvious target for kids TV. Theirs is the classic tale of teenage alienation, given a comic book twist: when puberty hits, as their peers grow hair in funny places and discover the joys of the opposite sex, certain young people begin to manifest strange super powers. Dubbed "mutants", they find themselves with any number of abilities that set them apart from their human peers. Some can fly, some can fire force-beams from their eyes, some can read minds, some are super-strong, some sprout wings; there are as many different powers as there are mutants. However, normal humans are jealous of mutants, and mutants find themselves hunted and/or ostracised by society. In order to fight this prejudice, the heroic X-Men were brought together as teenagers by the telepathic Professor X and trained to use their powers for the good of all humanity. The animated
X-Men series, which first debuted in the early 1990s, remained fairly faithful to the classic comic book series, inheriting several of the more popular characters (Wolverine, Cyclops, Rogue, Gambit, Storm, The Beast, etc) and, for the most part, leaving their personalities intact. Wolverine is still a surly little thug with a heart of gold, although his razor-sharp claws are now mainly used to slice up robots and other machines (less blood that way); Cyclops is their relatively square leader; The Beast is a bookworm, prone to literary quotations at random points in his conversation; and Gambit is the charming Cajun rogue. Unfortunately, the animation of
X-Men is, quite frankly, just not up to scratch, especially when judged against the much more stylish
Batman: The Animated Series, which was on televisions at the same time. Moreover, the pacing of
X-Men is, at times, painfully slow, so the action sequences plod along at a speed that would probably bore most
Pokémon addicts. --

Can't be bothered picking up a comicIf you can't be bothered picking up a comic book, god knows why, but want to find out what the X-MEN are start with these 'cartoons'. Never before (in my mind) has a 'cartoon' managed to capture the feeling of a comic book, bar of course 'The Adventures of Batman & Robin'. All the characthers are shown to their fullest Wolverine and hard nosed, anti-hero who really does care DEEP DEEP down to Proffesor X, caring, mysterious but strict. The 'cartoons' managed to capture everything it is such a shame that it never continued. The film arrived all be it very good the true research seemed to go into the 'cartoons'. Still X-MEN 2 is due in a year or so a My Synger (forgive spelling) is promising us a more characther based film so kudos to him for a least giving a damn, hopefully no fear of Mr. Joel and his Batman massacre. So if you can't be bothered picking up a comic, go for the 'cartoons'.

X-tremely entertaining! The X-Men cartoon series helped re-define animated entertainment in the US. Like Batman -the Animated Series, it proved that complex plots and well developed characters were not lost on the young or young at heart. Hard hitting themes of prejudice and bigotry are watered down for the tweenie market here, but the makers manage to keep the essence of the hit comic series. The new X-Men movie is bound to increase interest in these videos, but please release the whole series this time!

X-tremely goodAll I can say about the previous review is that the person is obviously not a fan of what can only be described as the best cartoon on Fox kids EVER. which is why I am buying as many as i can. The only downside is that when the movie comes out on the 4th july the characters voices will be different, but that aside the cartoon is brill !

The Toon without X-appeal.This cartoon shows why comic conversions don't work. Don't get me wrong it is still a good watch, but only for it's comedy content. The breaks in continuity (one minute they are fighting green badies, the next purple) it's wierd perspective issues (watch as Wolverine grows twice the size of a tree and the X-Men float out of the Blackbird) and listen to some of the most cornball dialogue of all time.
It just lacks the grit that the comic book has, some characterisation is okay (Gambit and Jubilee are the best examples) but the rest is awfull. Listen to the most patronising Storm you have ever heard. And what does Wolverine do when his team mate Morph dies? Thats right goes and plays some pool!
For any true X-Fan it is a must have for nostalgic reasons, but if you are looking for a well crafted cartoon, you are looking at the wrong video bub.
