When considering ambient music--from chill-out tunes, through progressive house to naturalistic New Age soundscapes--people tend to think of Kraftwerk as the electronic pioneers. Yet Kraftwerk themselves were influenced by another German act set on exploring the beauty of machinic music--Tangerine Dream--as were such electro luminaries as Jean Michel Jarre, the Orb and countless others. Formed by Edgar Froese in 1968 (and taking their name from a lyric in "Lucy In the Sky With Diamonds"), Tangerine Dream spent the 1970s and early 1980s delivering a renowned series of abstract, instrumental synthesiser-led dreamworks like IPhaedra/I, IRubycon/I, IForce Majeure/I and ITangram/I. And the beautifully packaged IDream Sequence/I is a wonderful double-CD collection of digitally remastered pieces from those halcyon years (along with two tracks from their inappropriately classy soundtrack to Tom Cruise's IRisky Business/I). p Tangerine Dream's lush, flamboyant, often tense and dramatic epics have marked much modern music, with the percentage still rising daily. A brilliant introduction to the Tangs.
I vaguely remember watching a live performance from, i believe, Coventry Cathedral, probably in the early eighties. That was my one and only taste of Tangerine Dream and, at the time, it certainly did not excite me to want more. On seeing this 'Best Of..', I thought I would take a chance and risk a few quid on it. On first listening, I thought 'mellow, cool, intersting'. Further listens (and there have been a lot!) and I now reckon its a few quid very well spent. The music never sinks into dull ambient, remaining vibrant throughout. Tracks such as Choronzon, Ricochet and Tangram are complex and teasing, while The Dream is Always the Same and Kiew Mission offer moments of real magic. An excellent album which has truly titillated the taste buds!

A Wonderful Introduction - to the "best" years of this band...
Perhaps I should have said "Most Consistant Years" of this band. br / br /I bought this originally years ago for two tracks only - "Love On A Real Train" and "The Dream Is Always The Same". These two discs have since served well subsequently in the car. br / br /Not sure if the mastering is from the "Definitive" work done in the nineties, or whether it's just the original that's been repackaged, but WELL WORTH IT as an introduction to their "classic" years with Virgin.

Newcomer to excellent music
This Album is a must for anyone who enjoys intrumental music and also giving a alround veiw of the music of tangerine dream. in my opinion this is a good starting point for music of tangerine dream.

A good value sampler
This 2 CD set (reissued with a pretty new cover using graphics from "Tangents") contains a fair representation of almost all of the Tangerine Dream albums recorded in the period 1973 to 1983 (the only ones missing are "Sorcerer", "Pergamon" and "Cyclone"). While it is not always the best track from each album that makes it into this set, and some are presented in bleeding chunk form only, these discs do give the listener a good overview of each album, making this a good sampler set from which to set out on an exploration of the music of Tangerine Dream's so-called Virgin Years. pRegular readers of my reviews will know that I don't usually approve of 'best of' collections, and usually rate them accordingly. However, I'm prepared to make an exception in this case because of the completeness, variety of programming and value for money demonstrated here. This release will be of little interest to established collectors of TD's music of this period but beginners could do a lot worse than start here.
