Amazon.co.uk Review
A 1999 romantic comedy starring Ray Winstone and Kerry Fox, Fanny and Elvis concerns Kate (Fox), a novelist who is informed by her doctor that if she wishes to become pregnant she had best hurry up. Distraught, she rushes to meet her husband but ends up ploughing her rusty old VW into the Jaguar of car dealer Dave (Winstone). They row furiously before both storming into the same pub, where they discover their respective partners are having an affair. With Kate financially embarrassed and Dave with nowhere to live, he lodges with her in lieu of payment on the damages to his car. Desperate to conceive, she seeks out the ideal sperm donor, as imagined in a running series of Wuthering Heights-type scenarios, before finding herself drawn to Dave.

It's all a little too cute. From the arresting North Yorkshire scenery to the obligatory carefree gay confidante, it feels like romantic Brit-comedy by numbers. Ray Winstone's transformation from barking, farting Sarf London geezer to soulful New Man is a bit abrupt, Jennifer Saunders is on auto-pilot as an Ab Fab-style literary agent and the ending is protracted and mawkish--a few more laughs wouldn't have gone amiss. Still, Fox carries her role very well and overall this is pleasant, if undemanding fare.--David Stubbs

Fanny and Elvis
I was told to watch this film ages ago...but I am an Elvis fan and somehow..have to confess the title just didn't grip me!!! However, I think Ray Winstone is a superb actor and based on that I watched the film. What a treasure it is too. The scene where Ray and Kerry get it together in the living room and Rays eagerness shows his head nodding faster and faster in agreement to her wishes and the Christmas fairy whirring around on top of the Christmas tree had us in hysterics!! The scene where he opens the bed clothes to welcome Kerry as she stood in the doorway had us girlies "melting" - this man shows such emotion in his eyes! We wanted it to be US!!! The car scene where Ray is upset had us filling up!! What a gem. Just get it and watch it, for every bad review there are hundreds of us who LOVED it!

Aromantic one for the boys and girls
This is a one off treat for both of you. Its romantic, dramatic, and funny at the same time. If your looking for a movie you can watch together then look no more. Guys, Ray is on top form and even wen hes all loved up hes still the top boy. Kerry holds her own as well, i never new she could be that funny. The hole film has a great mood to it that any one who has ever been in a relationship can relate to. Lines like "You killed me car" are still making me laugh now. Wach this film if you like romance, comedy, Ray Winstone or Kerry Fox.

Who would be your hero on the moors?
I defy anyone not to like this film. It is a real little gem. I had never heard of it until a friend told me to watch it. I was never a massive fan of Ray Winstone, but he is brilliant in this.

To sum up: writer is told by her doctor that she needs to get a shift on if she wants a baby. Writer rushes to find her husband in the pub. En route, she crashes into Ray Winstone's car. They both enter the pub to discover that their partners are having an affair. Oddly enough, Ray Winstone then becomes writer's lover.

This film is heartwarming. I loved all the characters. What doesn't this film have? Humour, tragedy the works.

Just brilliant. I can't believe this film was panned by the critics! They are far too pretentious for their own good!

A must for lovers of britsh comedy
Despite generally being panned by the critics, this film has all the ingredients which make the best british comedies. Kerry Fox's character is a romantic novelist living her own dreams through her books. When her husband leaves her for Ray Winstone's wife her pain is palpable. Ray Winstone as the enforced lodger who captures her heart is, indeed, 'sex on legs'. All this plus romance, comedy and fabulous scenery. It is a favourite of mine and everyone I have watched it with - male or female.

I was ready to love this but...
I'm sorry. I wanted to love this film, but it's terrible! I bought it because i just moved into the house next door to where it was filmed in Hebden Bridge. Ray Winstone is brilliant, but Kerry Fox, who can usually do no wrong, has the worst faux northern accent i've come accross. She does for Yorkshire what Dick van Dyke did for Cockney! Her character is irrititing to the extreme and totally over-acted. Jennifer Saunders is good and Hebden Bridge comes accross very well. I'd say the world on screen does exist. Come and live here...
