Good for Key Stage 1 & belowMy boys love watching this - they are 5 & 3 - and have learned lots from it. They are always coming out with tidbits of information that can only have come from this DVD. It really is a children's DVD - but a very good, educational one.

A good first intro for kids 5 - 8My seven year old daught enjoyed watching this, but as for the adults in the family, it wasn't that informative or highly polished. The effects were OK but not great, and it swapped between hard fact and Greek myths. Even my daughter isn't interested in watching it a second time.

A pleasant introduction to the planets...This DVD is a very brief introduction (under an hour) to the planets in our solar system, with familiar facts about them, as well as some very nice computer animations to illustrate the points made and give the viewer a slight sense of excitement. It is well narrated and has a good structure, despite being so short and limited in scope.
I think it would have been a much more fascinating watch if I had not seen 'The Planets (1999)' before this earlier effort, and in fact having watched the former and rated it as one of the best documentaries ever, this DVD seems to lack something, as all of the content is covered in 'The Planets' plus about ten times more.
Having said that though, a key aspect to this DVD which may determine whether you want to buy it or not is the age of audience that is being aimed at; here we have simply worded explanations and descriptions with basic on-screen goings on (e.g. Jupiter spinning around on its axis, rather than exploding stars & galaxies and such like, as you will find in other planetary documentaries), as well as a few interactive questions on the areas covered (which is hardly enough to justify the title of the DVD in my opinion); and so this would be an excellent introduction to an enthusiastic child or early teen.
For the rest of you though, I would strongly recommend The Planets for a spectacular extended version of this somewhat simple and limited DVD. Best wishes in your search for good viewing!
