Watch This FilmThis film is proof that it is not big bucks and big names that make a good film, it is the quality of the direction and the acting and a great soundtrack.
br /
br /All the characters are credible even when apparently over the top. Paddy Considine is superb as the dysfunctional Morrell and the two young lads are spot on all the way through. The supporting cast are all excellent and you can really believe in every one of them. The soundtrack fits in and pulls the film together perfectly.

br /Shane Meadows deserves credit for a great script, an marvellous choice of soundtracks and inspiring brilliant performances from an unknown cast. I only bought this film out of interest because my kids go to the school where some of it was filmed but I am very glad that I did.

"What I'm going to show you is bigger than Godzilla..."When you watch a Shane Meadows film you expect natural performances and housing estate based drama - and it's all here in a fantastically realistic package.
br /
br /This film is essentially the story of Romeo and Gavin, two schoolboy friends whose friendship is threatened when a third member joins the tight group. The 'third member'; Morell, a twenty-something man seems like a nice-enough guy though a bit socially awkward and perhaps a bit slow. He divides the two friends after becoming obsessed by Romeo's sister and his darker side starts to expose the unhinged aspect of his personality.
br /
br /Meadows' demonstrates his abilities to present the emotional aspects of men in his films. Be it a broken father trying to wriggle back into the lives of his ex-wife and kids, or an unbalanced man on the road to self destruction. It's not done with long cheesy moments of pained expressions and long passages of narrative blurting out mental anguish - it's done in a subtle and more effective way. His strength as a director is to capture portrayals which could be happening right there and then on your street, every character is believable. Even the mentally deficient Morell who provides us with some over-the-top comedy moments feels real.
br /
br /In a nutshell: A brilliant example of the type of cinema which feels as though it's more real life than fiction, and of which Meadow's is a master. Each character has a history, there are no clear cut bad eggs here - each is a product of their experiences. This is one of Meadows' earlier films, but it's still distinctly his. It feels wrong to describe the cast as actors as they never seem to be acting, they seem to *be* the characters they play on screen. A special mention to the superb Paddy Considine and young Andrew Shim who went on to appear in other Shane Meadows films.

Superb! This film is one of the best British films ever made, alongside 'Dead mans shoes' - also Shane meadows Paddy considine - check that out as well!

br /Myself being a young lad growing up looking up to an older kid who lived round the block this film hits the nail on head on so many levels.

br /
br /Its hard to write a review without spoiling a lot of it so in a nutshell :
br /
br /The directing is top notch with a superb soundtrack
br /
br /The acting is extremely good, especially from Considine the two main lads in the film ( Shim also pops up in This is england - again a Shane meadows masterpiece)
br /
br /Paddys ' Dance' is one of the funniest things you will see this year!
br /
br /The references to a child growing up looking to up to an older lad are superb spot on, there are so many layers to this film that it will make you laugh, Cry, Cringe but most of all enjoy!
br /
br /One of the BEST British films ever one of my top 10 Moves EVER!

A RoomSets itself up as a typical learning life through unlikely friendship story but then becomes a far more realistic portrayal of the weasels among us and, ultimately, the importance of old family friends

6/10. Brassed offLike Shane Meadows' later `This is England', `A Room For Romeo Brass' is a coming of age drama revolving around friends growing up in the working class Midlands. Both films feature friendships tested by the divisive arrival of an influencial older figure. The protagonists in both films seek friendship to escape disappointment or disenfranchisement from family life. While the latter film places this scenario in the context of class conflict in Thatcher's britain and the rise of the skinhead movement, the thematic concerns of `Romeo Brass' are less contemporaneous. Its outsider comes in the surreal shape of Morel (played by the brilliant Paddy Considine), a small-town oddball who takes an instant and ultimately obsessive interest in the eponymous character's sister. Considine is always fascinating to watch (from Meadows' own `Dead Man's Shoes' to Pawel Pawlikowski's `My Summer of Love') and he is by turns hilarious and terrifying here as the volatile Morel.
br /
br /For all Considine's brilliance on screen there is something lacking in this film's purpose. Whereas This is England's small-scale drama manages to address wider social decline in a specific historical context, A Room For Romeo Brass` concerns are perhaps not broad enough. It is certainly not the first film about an obsessive and intimidating individual insinuating himself into family life (cinema is rife with them, from the great to the really poor). Once you take that out of the equation, there is not a great deal else to capture the imagination. Its stark Midlands setting, non-professional actors and a liberal use of improvisation are all classic Meadow's hallmarks - harking back to kitchen sink dramas of the British New Wave in the 1960s. Coupled with the director's handpicked indie, pop and reggae soundtrack, it is easy to see why his moniker `Scorcese of the Midlands' persists. However, `A Room for Romeo Brass' is simply an enjoyable film, not a very good one, and compares unfavourably to some of his other works.
