Not just another collection of Scandinavian light classics, this disc mixes in evergreens and unfamiliar gems to persuasive effect. As well as generous of extracts from Grieg's Peer Gynt music and Holberg Suite, there are a number of miniatures seldom heard live or on radio these days, but which are never less than pleasurable listening: pieces such as Lars-Erik Larsson's wistful Romance and Ture Rangström's playful Scherzo Leggiero, Olle Jansson's folksy Church March and Erna Tauro's bittersweet Autumn Song, and Armas Järnefelt's poetic Berceuse. The fact that Dag Wirén's Alla Marcia has rarely been heard on TV since the 1960s hasn't lessened its popularity, while the nostalgia of Grieg's Spring continues to speak to all times. Whether or not the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Strings put on regular recitals of this music, they certainly play it to the manner born--this is stylish and captivating music making. Opening with the energetic rush of the Prelude from the Holberg Suite and closing with the melancholy of the same work's "Air", this is a disc playable either in selections or at a single sitting--and its unlikely you'll resist the latter option for long. --Richard Whitehouse
