Doctor Who goes all Pink PantherThis has been voted the second best Doctor Who episode of all time by the diehards, and as a casual fan myself, I have to admit that it's got alot going for it. It is about an alien disguised as a Count, trying to steal the Mona Lisa.
This story has a charming playful script by Douglas Adams (The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy), a classy, stylish Parisian setting, plus you get a John Cleese Cameo thrown in. Julian Glover plays the Count, & Catherine Schell the Countess, and they both really HAM it up, but in a good way.
Tom Baker & Lalla Ward are really enjoying themselves here, & Tom's acting is so comically over the top, that it reminds me of his narration for 'Little Britain'.
There is nothing else in the entire series like this episode, it is truly unique, more like a Pink Panther Film than a typical Doctor Who story.

I Say! What a wonderful Butler. He's so violent! For me this is the Doctor Who at its very best. The excellent Tom Baker and the equally excellent Lalla Ward as Romana. People always look to Sarah Jane Smith whenever a stronger female character mentioned, but for me, I believe Romana was by far the strongest. Despite the expected dodgy effects this is wondefully scripted and as self-aware as it always should have been. Fantastic.

Sublime. One of the finest moments in Dr Who's long history, City of Death only takes itself seriously when it's absolutely necessary (which is about twice). It works best as a light drawing-room comedy with the Doctor and Romana as carefree lovers entangled in the machinations of a sauve, power-mad millionaire criminal who probably cheats at Patience - the fact that he wears a mask made of spaghetti is irrelevant. Glorious music, cosmopolitan setting, the Mona Lisa, John Cleese, Julian Glover, no K-9... it's got something for everyone. And it's also one of the few Doctor Whos in which Tom Baker's manic performance actually adds to the story. As I said, sublime.

High Jinx in ParisThis is wonderful. From the moment you hear Romana asking the Doctor whether they should fly down from the Eiffel Tower, through a surprise appearance by John Cleese and Eleanor Bron to the interplay between Julian Glover and Catherine Schnell's Count and Countess you are entranced, not scared admittedly this is Doctor Who being fun not scary but it's brilliant for all that.

A delightfully witty and entertaining slice of classic TV!This story has to be one of the finest Doctor Who adventures ever. It has everything: a clever, playful script; some marvellous Parisian locations; excellent visual effects, and a clutch of actors who throw their all into the action. Even the soundtrack is top notch, with Dudley Simpson contributing a superb incidental score which greatly enhances the visuals. This is Doctor Who at its wittiest and most watchable. If you haven't seen it then what are you waiting for?
