Editorial reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
Unlike those of the other members of her family, Janet Jackson's albums are still worth waiting for. The best parts of All for You, her first disc since 1997's The Velvet Rope, continue to display the first-class pop-R&B talent who broke through decisively in the mid-80s with "What Have You Done for Me Lately" and "Nasty". Jackson's longtime cohorts Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis are on board, and the production-writing trio demonstrates its mastery of everything from dirty funk ("You Ain't Right") to peppy, radio-perfect ("Come on Get Up" and 2000's No. 1 "Doesn't Really Matter") and hypnotically undulating sounds ("When We Oooo"). While much of All for You is irresistible, its handful of failures are poorly conceived and executed. Most glaring among these is "Son of a Gun (I Betcha Think This Song Is About You)", an unlistenable sequel to Rope's "Got til It's Gone" which substitutes one self-regarding singer-songwriter diva (Carly Simon) for another (Joni Mitchell), thereby wrecking Simon's one golden moment, "You're So Vain". "Son of a Gun" and "Truth" apparently target estranged husband Rene Elizondo, but Jackson is hardly as convincing a revenge artist as she is a sex kitten. In fact, the likes of "Love Scene (Ooh Baby)" and "Would You Mind" out-spice even the carnally obsessed Velvet Rope and Janet Janet. --Rickey Wright

Identity Crisis
All For You will be loved by hardcore fans, and ignored by others - I sitsomewhere in the middle, liking her music, but I think this is a decidedlymixed effort.
From the singles, you would think All For You was a breezy pop LP with anendless stream of catchy tracks. However, this is not the case. All ForYou, Someone To Call My Lover, and Son of a Gun act like beacons in a mireof album filler, punctuated with the occasional star like 'Come On GetUp.' Doesn't Really Matter sounds out of place and is relegated to the endof the tracklist, despite being a strong song individually.
Would You Mind and Love Scene are just unnecessarily sexed up (Would YouMind featuring a whole 2 minutes of erotic moaning at the end), whileChina Love's oriental pangs and Trust a Try's high pitched screech-liketones are just bizarre.
The interludes, rather than being relevant, meaningful, and well connectedto the main songs, as in new effort Damita Jo, are a meaningless cocktailof strange noises and inexplicable swipes ('You men are just lamesometimes, I'm telling you' springs to mind as one particularlyunneccessary one). Don't tarnish us all with Rene's brush, Janet!
At the core, All For You is good as a way of uniting the eminent singlereleases. As an album, it sits in an identity crisis, stretching so farfrom the mainstream that it becomes inaccessible and hard work to get intoproperly, with a disappointing overreliance on ballads, which becomes verytedious.
In Damita Jo, the new album, the sound is much more coherent and funky, and is sure to please mainstream pop fans more - if you're one of these, buy that, and be careful about how much of a JJ fan you are before you buythis.

Happy, Sunny, Sexy
I'm among those many who are still missing the spirit of "Control" and "Rhythm Nation". However, compared to the albums of other singers, Janet is still the queen. (...) we true music fans left only with Janet and Mariah (okay, Alicia Keys is a promising one, but she still has to prove she won't be an one-album star). It is good that these two divas never disappoint us.

Now about the album: After The Velvet Rope, it is a refreshing change to find mostly happy love songs on the CD. Okay, everyone sings about love but Janet can do it differently. Three of the singles, All For You, Someone To Call My Lover and Doesn't Really Matter are happy, upbeat summer songs. The slow songs are mainly the ones for which the album got banned in some conservative countries, but Janet doesn't sound obscene even when using some words your grandma would be scared of.

There are two songs that show us the angry Janet: "Son of a Gun" which is, as someone described it here, a man-bashing song (actually its remix is better so watch out the single) and "You Ain't Right", which is about a friend who betrayed her. We also got two songs that reminds of the Velvet Rope album, namely "Truth" which is an answer to Rene Elizondo's claims that Janet was a nobody without him (what a stupid macho...) and "Better Days" which is an optimistic song with a Spanish-sounding melody.

The only bad thing is that she released only a few singles (while 2/3 of the songs on "Control" and "Rhythm Nation 1814" and half of "janet." were released as singles.) We fans usually agree that "Trust A Try" would have been an excellent single, and in my opinion "You Ain't Right" would have done it too.

All For The Fans
I read the other reviews for this album and agree with quite a lot of what has been said. Basically, my premise for this album is that there are a few VERY good records which are fantastic but there are also some which are simply 'fillers' (as I think somebody said) and they therefore lower the general tone of the album and reflect slightly on the better work. The best tracks are You Ain't Right, Trust A Try, Son Of A Gun and Doesn't Really Matter. All For You, Come On Get Up, China Love, Feels So Right and Better Days are okay and I do enjoy listening to these tracks but they could have been done better. The sex songs drag on a bit and are a little cringeworthy; they didn't really appeal but the end of Would You Mind brought a smile to my face....Truth is dirgy and goes on too long. But keep going Janet, you ve produced good work..but more urban funk please!

where has rnb janet gone? (3 and a half stars)
i think we were all expecting a bangin album from miss janet, after the sheer brilliance of the velvet rope. im a huge janet fan and i have to say this is a little disappointing. the album for me has too much pop like 'come on get up' and 'all for you', although they are enjoyable, anyone could have made these, they dont have any of janets amazing style. there is only one rnb song on here - 'feels so right' which wasnt expected, the baby making songs are great especially 'would you mind' ( listen out for janets ending to this song - very funny ;) ) and 'china love', although they become a little repetative if listened to after each other, like they appear on the album (i just put the album on shuffle). other stand out tracks are 'better days' and 'trust a try'. tracks to seriously avoid though are all the very ANNOYING interludes, 'truth' and 'you aint right'. and a word of warning the version of 'son of a gun' doesnt feature missy and this version is very loooong, although very explicit and funny. the album is never unlistenable but is no where near as good as the velvet rope or janet. but its worth picking up :)
