Plato's Euthyphro for 1960
I was deeply impressed by the quality of acting - some of the dialogue may have inevitably dated but the performances are first rate.

Actually this film shows a deeply corrupt management AS WELL as union bullying. If you think a Union is automatically right simply by virtue of being a Union you will probably find this film appalling.

If you only want to see "Reds Under the Bed" you will overlook the blatent immorality of the management.

And rather than portraying some absolutely clear-cut hero, The Angry Silence also questions Tom Curtis himself - we can only guess just why he is taking this course of action.

Maybe this film highlights what happens to individual people trapped between competing ideologies with plenty of rhetoric but little humanity

By the way - I have suffered severely in companies with no effective Union presence and I KNOW just how important they are.

I have also endured Union representation which overlooked racist and sectarian bullying and sexual harrassment by fellow employees who happened to be friendly with the shop stewards.

Alone against mob mentality
This film can really only be appreciated by people who's society has been heavily influenced by union rule. If a viewer comes from a different culture, or who has no knowledge or experience of mob mentality, they would not be able to enjoy this film for what it is - an cinematic portrayal of the type of events that used to occur in working societies dominated by unionism.

My hero, the scab!
This is a very one-sided film with the simplistic message "labour unions bad". From my own point of view, the politics of this film are reprehensible. Being an Amurican, I see this as evoking a very polarized period in British history, how else to explain the cartoonishly villainous union instigator, orchestrating the strike mayhem and lurking around in the shadows and around corners, an evil puppeteer. Why, if he'd just go away, everyone would work together in harmony without a thought in their proletarian pea-brains! And the common street thugs, what are they even doing at work? They should be on the street, thugging. But no, they're busy at work for the union, intimidating and undermining. Actually, they're the best part of this film, bringing some life to the dreary proceedings, and Oliver Reed is wonderful. But Richard Attenborough is wooden and unlikeable as the hero scab. One man standing up for what he believes in is a great idea for a movie, more filmmakers should try it! Too bad what he believes in is his place in the status quo and not upsetting the apple cart. After all, a baby's on the way! And where did the beautiful Italian wife come from? Even today she's selling the film, her picture plastered all over the DVD, including a couple of glamour shots that have nothing to do with the film. Yes, for me there's no end to the things to hate about this film/DVD. I suppose there are subtleties I'm missing, like the "beginning of a lack of solidarity in unions" alluded to on the DVD back cover, me being a privileged Amurican and all, but F that. This simplistic film deserves to be taken on its merits, and so my DVD is going straight to the landfill. Maybe future archaeologists will get a larf from it, if they can figure out how to play it.(ps - Hope I spelled labor, glamor and laugh correctly, this being my first UK Amazon review...Peace, out!)

Fifties British working class drama
Filmed in Ipswitch during the post war economy boom, Richard Attenborough is Tom Curtis, a factory worker whose solidarity with his striking co-workers is challenged and ultimately broken by his boss. His decision is met with growing resentment from his colleagues. Very fine performances by Attenborough and Pier Angeli who plays his wife Anna.

Director Guy Green has created a very real drama in which you can readily imagine how life must have been in this British post war town. The dark and gritty atmosphere adds to the realism.
I thought the script was really solid and should have been given an Oscar. A lot of thought went into this gripping drama that will hold your attention all though till the end of the movie. You'll notice Oliver Reed who plays a small part as Mick and Michael Craig as Tom's friend. A movie worth seeing.
