Solid, but not the Perfect Compilation!
This compilation could be the right investment for the buyer who wants only one CD by this band. Featuring their two best known tracks "Somebody to Love" and "White Rabbit" the CD is likely to satisfy the casual buyer.

Containing songs from all their 6 studio albums + a couple of live recordings it gives a pretty good general view of the band's recording career.

It will always be a matter of taste and a subject to discussion which specific tracks ought represent the various albums on a compilation CD.

I think most tracks are well chosen even though I miss great tracks like "Come Up the Years" (Takes Off), "My Best Friend" (Surrealistic Pillow), "Martha" (Baxter's) and "The Good Shepherd" (Volunteers)

The booklet of 8 pages is a complete disappointment; with sparse information on the tracks and only a very brief band biography.

A Pleasant Surprise !
"Thirty Seconds Over Winterland" is my only previous exposure to the Airplane so I was pleasantly surprised by their range of musical styles - from the opening beautiful acoustic guitar solo of "Embryonic Journey" through to the end anthem "Have You Seen the Saucers". The lyrics might be considered very much of their time - flower power, acid.... etc - but the music is so good that it dwarfs such considerations; e.g the ending of "White Rabbit" is Grace Slick crying out "Feed your head" but in such a stunning way!

There are no dud tracks on this compilation but if I had to pick out one track amongst the gold it would be "When the Earth Moves Again" - a superb anthem.

The Airplane Rock
This product is immense. 21 top quality songs. Jefferson Airplane are absolutely great. The Airplane are way before my lifetime but I still love the band!!

Lets not get excited now
I'm not a rabid airplane fan so here's a more objective review of their 'best of' album for any curious outsiders. If you've already heard 'somebody to love' or the sublime 'white rabbit' then you're probably aware of how good Jefferson Airplane can be. However, those two tracks are by far the best here. The others are either good, iffy or downright embarassing. This is an extreme excercise in hippyish rambling, and while the LSD fuelled madness can produce some brilliant music, there are a fair few tracks I would rather forget. 'Lather', for example, opens with an ethereal voice whispering 'child', and consists mostly of olde english folky medieval bollocks that had me in tears of laughter from start to finish. What stuns me is just how earnestly and whole heartedly they plunge into each track, no matter how bad it may seem. There are, in fairness, some cracking tunes in this CD, but Jefferson Airplane are very much a product of their time, and those of us born after the flower power movement may struggle to see what the fuss is about.

Best of the best of
Most Best-Of albums are a patchwork of good to half decent tracks, with a few stand-out numbers. This one isn't like that. It is literally one of the best Best-Of compilations I have come across, without a single duffer track in sight. Every single track is brilliant. Remarkable, and even for those of us with many an Airplane album in their collections I would consider this a must-have album. If you've never heard much of the Airplane before now, this is most definitely the best starting point. It's a terrific album of brilliant flower-power rock n roll.
