A Surprise, and Ben Affleck proves he can really act
Two films about post-war Los Angeles, one wirh a stellar cast ' The Black Dahlia' and the other with less 'A List' names but every bit as good if not better, 'Hollywoodland'. The ever dependable Adrien Brody leads the cast but it is the return to form of Ben Affleck which is the real pleasure, he finally seems to have overcome the Curse of JLO. The corrupt power of the Hollywood Studios personified by an outstanding Bob Hoskins, who is supremely chilling, is the background for 2 victims: Louis Simo (Brody), and George 'Superman' Reeves (Affleck) who both underestimate the malevolence of the outwardly benign Movie business - Hollywoodland. br /Though based on true events, the story is speculation, however plausible,and use is of made Kenneth Anger's Hollywood Babylon to reinforce the questions it raises about Reeves' death. The factual basis adds an extra frisson to an already excellent story.
