heavenly
this is amazing,it was my first neurosis album i heard and i was blown away, the menace looms large as the songs build and become a monster of intensity and aggression ,this is metal, neurosis were the main influence of many a metal band and im glad that i have become a fan, they are superb, special mention must go to the song watchfire which is as beautiful as it is angry and that isnt an easy thing to do ,neurosis do it with no effort at all

An album that never sets.
First of all, if you're familiar with Neurosis this album may be a shock.brOr maybe it won't; every Neurosis fan knows that this band slowly progresses, matures and develops over time, much like a child. brWith their first album, Pain Of Mind they were only a newborn entity; kicking and screaming with all hardcore brutality.brThe next couple of albums saw Neurosis developing into infancy, growing thoughts and emotions. Enemy of The Sun and Through Silver In Blood see Neurosis progressing further, becoming slower and more intricate, adding soundscapes and rich textures. Times Of Grace sees the band maturing, mid twenties kind of thing; The heaviness is still there but the songwriting is more mature and experimental.brThen we arrive at A Sun That Never Sets. The band is now mature and comfortable with it's sound. Heaviness gives way to superb songwriting and original musical ideas. Subtle, Mark Lanegan-style singing replaces screaming and roars. Steve Von Till gets more of a look in on the vocal front: much like Away from Times Of Grace.brThe album is much more depressing and subdued than anything they've put out before. This gives way to more developed songwriting and instrumentation and it really shows. Falling Unknown lasts 13 minutes and carry you through vast, barren lands of bleak desert. The Tide shows off Von Till's voice and new slants towards melody instead of bludgeon. Of course it wouldn't be Neurosis without the bludgeon so it's still there. In fact the heaviest thing I've heared by the band is the last couple of minutes of Stones From The Sky: it gets gradually more distorted and the music mimics skipping like the disc is wrecked then it stops abruptly.brThis is a magnificent album: accomplished, majestic and an overall easier listen than Neurosis' other albums.brBuy if you appreciate Neurosis, Isis and clever emotional metal.

Gloomy, bleak, dark and depressing, Neurosis at their best!
Quite different from Times Of Grace and what came before, because at first listen it is a bit of a shock, Von Till and Kelly actually sing on this album. Now when I say sing I dont mean Celene Dion or anything! but unusually audible. Some might think this is a bit too different but lets face it, none of these songs are ever gonna be on Top OF The Pops! It opens with the usual, melancholic instrumental number "Erode" and follows on with "The Tide", a slow broody piece, accompanied by violin and viola to excellent effect. From here in it gets a little heavier but retains the calssical side, which suits the album perfectly to create ultimate cacophony! Not an album suited to someone looking for the next "Limp Biskit", but Neurosis have been around for a long time and will continue to do so if this album is anything to judge by, mesmerising stuff!!
