A really excellent blues album
Scrapper Blackwell is not one of the 'major' names as a solo blues artist, but he's certainly one of the best as this recording that was made toward the end of a long career clearly shows. His acoustic guitar style is very percussive, being quite brutal at times, and is very different to that of many country guitar players. But he's not really a country blues man at all, because there's a strong 'urban' feel to his music. It's a sort of country style, shifted into the city, and because of that it's much more accessible to a modern audience than (for example) Robert Johnson's material.
The vocals are good. Maybe he's technically more of a guitarist than a singer, but he has that vital ingredient that all blues singers must have: authenticity. He's never singing a song as much as expressing the meaning behind the words. 'Nobody Knows You When You're Down And Out' has been sung by many artists, including Clapton, but Scrapper's version is maybe the best of all, because he went from pre-war stardom to post-war obscurity and the song had personal meaning for him. Add a couple of super instrumental numbers, and the result is a very good album indeed which deserves better than to be languishing so far down Amazon's sales table...believe me, it's miles better than it's lowly position might lead you to think!
